Trent Dilfer Says He's Retiring

POSTED: 1:35 am EDT July 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - Quarterback Trent Dilfer said Wednesday that he will make a formal announcement in the coming days to signal the end of his 13-year NFL career.

Speaking in a teleconference in advance of this week's American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, Dilfer said a recent Achilles injury he suffered while on vacation clarified his intention to retire.

"There will be a formal announcement in the next few days about that," he said. "And I'm just really thrilled and looking forward to what's next for me. And obviously miss football. It's been a huge part of my life. But from here on out I'm excited about the possibilities and looking forward."

Dilfer won a Super Bowl as the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens in 2000.

The 36-year old threw for 20,518 yards in his career with 113 touchdowns and 129 interceptions. He played for Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Seattle, Cleveland, and San Francisco.

In his last season with the 49ers, Dilfer appeared in seven games - six starts - and threw for 1,166 yards, seven touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
