49ers Sign First-Rounder Balmer

Thursday, July 24, 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers signed their first-round draft pick, defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer, on Thursday. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The Niners chose Balmer -- a North Carolina product -- with the 29th overall pick in the April draft. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder ranked second among Atlantic Coast Conference defensive tackles with 59 tackles for the Tar Heels last season, while adding 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

The versatile lineman started 23 games in his career at Chapel Hill, playing both defensive tackle spots along with spending some time at defensive end.
