Seahawks Release RB Alexander

POSTED: 8:41 pm EDT April 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Seahawks released their all-time rushing leader, running back Shaun Alexander, on Tuesday.

Alexander originally joined the Seahawks as the 19th overall selection in the 2000 NFL Draft and went on to help Seattle win the last four NFC West division titles, as he became the franchise's career leader in rushing yards (9,429), attempts (2,176), total touchdowns (112), and 100-yard rushing games (37).

The Alabama product owns or shares 37 club single-game, single-season and career records and his 100 rushing touchdowns are tied with Marshall Faulk for seventh most in NFL history.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Alexander also became the first Seahawks player to earn NFL MVP honors after breaking the NFL record for most touchdowns in one season in 2005 when he found the end zone 28 times. San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson has since broken that record with 31 TDs in 2006.

"This was an extremely difficult decision," said president/general manager Tim Ruskell. "We thank Shaun for his commitment both on and off the field over the last eight years. He played a huge role in the renaissance of football in Seattle and for that we will always be grateful."
