Washington, DC -- (Sports Network) - Joffrey Lupul's first goal of the playoffs came at the 6:06 mark of overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers the series win with a 3-2 victory against the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at Verizon Center.

In the extra session, Philadelphia was awarded a power play when Tom Poti was called for tripping at the 4:15 mark.

The Flyers established pressure in the Washington zone on the man advantage and got several shots on net, but Cristobal Huet came up with a couple of saves and it appeared that the Caps were going to kill the advantage.

However, the puck squirted out to the high slot where Kimmo Timonen blasted a shot on net that Huet stopped. The rebound, though, sat to the left of the goal and Lupul tucked the puck past Huet for the series win.

"I turned around over my right shoulder to my backhand and it was right there and I just banged it into the net," said Lupul. "There was not much thinking I had to do. It was just there and I put it in before I could think about it too much."

Scottie Upshall and Sami Kapanen each scored in regulation for the Flyers, who advance to the semifinals where they will face the Montreal Canadiens with Game 1 set for Thursday in Montreal.

Martin Biron was stellar again in net as he stopped 39 shots in the win for Philadelphia, which last played a Game 7 in 2004 during the Eastern Conference finals against Tampa Bay, which the team lost.

"We had a three one lead and they climbed back in," said Flyers coach John Stevens. "Everybody was worried about it going to Game 7, I think when the series is over and you look back. I mean going into the series both teams were evenly matched, there was great stories on both side of the puck. The thing I'm disappointed in is that we could not win it in front of our fans and we had to come on the road to do it."

Alexander Ovechkin finished with a goal and an assist and Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals, who were looking to rally from a three games to one deficit in the teams first playoff appearance since the 2002-03 season. Huet made 31 saves in the loss.

"We thought we deserved to win," Poti said. "We were playing our best hockey at the end of the series. It's tough. We thought we could have gone a long way."

"I was shocked," said Ovechkin. "I was a little confused. We had a lot of chances to put it in the net and we didn't put it in. I just saw how they celebrated."

With 48 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage, the Capitals took the early lead. With Scott Hartnell and Derian Hatcher in the box, Ovechkin blasted a shot from the high slot that missed the net, but it bounced off the endboards to the right side and Backstrom banged it home at the 5:42 mark of the first.

However, the Flyers answered with a power-play goal of their own to tie the contest. Upshall slapped a shot on net from the left circle that Huet slowed down, but it retained enough momentum to trickle between the pads and into the net with 4:22 left in the first.

Philadelphia had a golden opportunity to take the lead later in the first as the team had a full two minutes of a 5-on-3 opportunity, but Washington weathered the storm and the game headed to the second tied.

The teams again exchanged goals in the second period, but this time it was the Flyers striking first.

Kapanen drove the net and, with a Capital all over him, spun around and attempted to get the puck to Patrick Thoresen, who missed the pass and along with a Washington player crashed into Huet. The puck then made its way to the right circle where Kapanen blasted it into the net with the goaltender tied up along with the players on the ice for a 2-1 lead at the 9:47 mark.

The Capitals, though, responded to tie the contest with 4:31 left in the frame. Shortly after a Washington power play expired, Ovechkin grabbed a pass and from the left circle fired a laser that beat Biron cleanly.

Washington thoroughly dominated much of the third period as the team outshot Philadelphia, 16-5, and spent much of the time in the Flyers end of the ice. Biron, though, kept coming up with the big saves and the teams skated to sudden death.

The other Eastern Conference semifinal features the Pittsburgh Penguins taking on the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh has home-ice advantage in the series, which will start in the Steel City on Friday...It was the second overtime playoff winner in Lupul's career...The last time the Capitals played a Game 7 was in the 1995 quarterfinals, which the team lost to Pittsburgh...It was the 29th Game 7 overtime in the history of the NHL playoffs...Philadelphia's Daniel Briere, who had an assist in the game, sits atop the point lead in the playoffs with 11 (six goals, five assists)...Philadelphia went 2-for-6 on the power play while Washington finished 1- for-4...Washington had come back from a 3-1 deficit once before against the Flyers, as it won the final three games to shock Philadelphia in the 1988 Patrick Division semifinals...The Flyers are now 7-6 in Game 7s while Washington fell to 1-5...Ovechkin had four goals and five assists in the series.
