New York Islanders (10-10-7) At Atlanta Thrashers (14-7-3), 7 P.M.
(Sports Network) - The red-hot Atlanta Thrashers will attempt to cap off a so- far perfect homestand on a winning note when the New York Islanders pay a visit to Philips Arena this evening. Atlanta has won the first two tests of this three-game residency and four in a row overall after edging fellow Southeast Division member Florida on Monday. It's the eighth victory in the past 11 games for the resurgent Thrashers, who finished well out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture after accumulating only 76 points last season. The Thrashers claimed a thrilling 4-3 triumph over the Panthers on Maxim Afinogenov's goal with just 5.5 seconds remaining in regulation. The offseason addition, who spent the past nine seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, has now amassed 11 goals and 14 assists in 24 games during the 2009-10 campaign. "He's been a great surprise for us," Thrashers head coach John Anderson said of Afinogenov. "It's like he has a new lease on life here and were glad to have him." Mark Popovic, Ilya Kovalchuk and Chris Thorburn also tallied for Atlanta, while Johan Hedberg finished with 25 saves in the win. The veteran goaltender was coming off an outstanding 34-save performance in the Thrashers' 1-0 verdict over Philadelphia on Saturday. The Thrashers will be aiming for their first five-game win streak since the club ripped off six victories in a row from March 6-16 of last season. The Islanders hope to rebound from an unwanted beginning to their current five-game road trip, a 6-1 setback to fellow Atlantic Division member New Jersey on Saturday. After spotting New York a 1-0 lead after one period, the Devils erupted for a pair of goals in the second and four more in the third. "When we don't do the right things, it's going to happen," said Isles goaltender Martin Biron of New Jersey's scoring outburst. "It should have happened before in the game and we got lucky. They hit a few posts. If you keep playing with fire, you're going to get burned." Richard Park had the lone highlight for the Islanders, who were outshot by a 42-23 margin for the game, when he fired a shot past the Devils' Martin Brodeur with 8:42 left in the opening period. Biron ended with 36 saves in a losing cause. The Islanders did play Saturday's test without veteran defenseman Andy Sutton, who will also sit out tonight's game due to a strained groin. New York, which will also travel to Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and Toronto on this trek, fell to 4-7-5 as the visitor this season. The Islanders did deal the Thrashers a 6-3 loss in Long Island on November 7 and have emerged victorious in two of their last three stops in Atlanta as well.
