Flyers Try To End East Semis In Montreal
(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Flyers will try to end the Eastern Conference semifinals tonight, when they visit the top-seeded Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 at the Bell Centre.Philadelphia earned a split at Montreal in the first two games of the best-of- seven set and then grabbed a 3-1 series' lead with back-to-back victories on its home ice. The Canadiens were 22-13-6 as the host team this season, while Philadelphia was 21-15-5 on the road. If necessary, the clubs will meet for Game 6 Sunday evening in Philly. Montreal will have Carey Price back in goal tonight after head coach Guy Carbonneau elected to start Jaroslav Halak and sit the rookie Price in Game 4. Halak, making his first start since March 29 and first of his playoff career, made 22 saves in defeat. The 20-year-old Price is 5-5 with a 2.55 goals against average and .907 save percentage in this year's playoffs. He has surrendered 10 goals on 68 shots in the current series for a dismal .853 save percentage. Game 4 took place on Wednesday night at the Wachovia Center and the Flyers came out on top to grab a two-game advantage. Danny Briere's power-play goal with 3:38 remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner, as Philadelphia defeated the Canadiens, 4-2. R.J. Umberger scored twice for the sixth-seeded Flyers and he now has six goals in this series and seven markers in the postseason. Philadelphia holds a 3-1 lead in the series and is one win away from reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2004, when the Flyers were ousted in seven games by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Flyers blew a 3-1 lead in the opening round against Washington before winning Game 7 on the road. Scott Hartnell also lit the lamp and Briere added an assist, while Vaclav Prospal collected two helpers. Martin Biron was a rock in goal, stopping 36 of 38 shots to earn the victory. Dating back to Game 7 of Philly's opening-round series, Biron has stopped 171- of-183 shots for an impressive .934 save percentage. The 30-year-old netminder is 7-4 with a 2.60 goals against average and .917 save percentage in 11 games during his first-ever NHL postseason. Forward Mike Knuble returned to the lineup for the Flyers and notched an assist. Knuble slid awkwardly while trying to block a shot in Game 5 of the team's conference quarterfinal series against the Capitals and suffered a torn hamstring. He missed the final two games of that series and the first three tests of the current set. Tomas Plekanec and Saku Koivu provided the offense for the Canadiens. Francis Bouillon had two assists for Montreal, which has overcome a 3-1 series deficit only once in its storied history. The Canadiens rallied to eliminate the Boston Bruins in the conference quarterfinals in 2004. Montreal is the only Canadian team remaining in the playoffs. No team based in Canada has won a Stanley Cup since the Canadiens earned their NHL-record 24th title in 1993. The Habs are in the second round for the first time since 2004, when they lost to Tampa Bay in the conference semifinals. The Canadiens were a perfect 4-0 against Philadelphia during the regular season and outscored the Flyers by a 15-6 margin over that span. Montreal is 3-1 all-time in playoff series against the Flyers, including a win in the 1976 Stanley Cup finals. The last postseason encounter between the teams came in 1989, when the Habs defeated Philly in the Wales Conference finals.
