NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders At NY Rangers

POSTED: 11:40 pm EDT April 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Richard Park scored the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout as the Islanders downed the Rangers, 4-3, in the back end of a home-and-home set at Madison Square Garden.

Jaromir Jagr posted a goal and an assist while Henrik Lundqvist finished the game with 29 saves for the Rangers, who had won their previous two games and with 96 points sit in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. That's one behind the Devils.

The Rangers last game of the season will be a big one as the team travels to New Jersey on Sunday. Should the Rangers win the game in regulation, they will be guaranteed home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

"Regardless of where we finish the playoffs are a whole new season and a whole new challenge," said Rangers forward Brendan Shanahan. "Whether you're the favorite or the underdog you go out and battle. If we win in regulation on Sunday we get home-ice advantage. You play hard for it, but once the playoffs start you have to win on the road. It is important, though, to have home-ice for a possible Game 7."

In the fourth round of the shootout, Park skated in on net and went with a wrister that Lundqvist got a piece of, but not enough to keep it out of the net.

Petr Prucha had the last chance for the Rangers, but Wade Dubielewicz made the save for the win.

Park had a goal and an assist while Dubielewicz finished the game with 48 saves for the Islanders, who finished their season by snapping a four-game skid.

The Islanders finished the season with a mark of 35-38-9, good for 79 points and 13th in the Eastern Conference.

"It's always nice to win, but it doesn't overshadow the fact that there is a lot of disappointment and sadness in our locker room," said Park. "It's a little bit of a band-aid over the wound, but the hurt is still there."

The Islanders grabbed a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period. On the fly, Blake Comeau sent a backhand pass from the left circle to the right where Kyle Okposo let fly with a wrister that beat Lundqvist to the low left side.

Dubielewicz stopped all 13 shots thrown his way in the first period.

The Rangers tied the game at the 2:29 mark of the second frame as Dan Girardi received a pass at the top of the left circle and drifted in on net before letting loose a wrister that beat Dubielewicz to the right corner of the net.

The Islanders, though, answered a bit over three minutes later. Jack Hillen put a shot on net that changed direction, but Lundqvist made the save. Miroslav Satan, however, was on the doorstep to push in the rebound as Lundqvist was trying to cover up the puck.

The Rangers again tied the game, this time with 6:50 left in the second as Nigel Dawes sent a shot on net from the left point that hit off an Islander and got past Dubielewicz.

The Rangers had a golden opportunity to take the lead later in the period when they were awarded a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power play time, but it was the Islanders that took the lead during the advantage.

Shortly after a faceoff, Park picked off a pass in his own end and skated down the ice. From down low he fired a shot on net that Lundqvist slowed down with the glove, but it retained enough momentum to slide into the net for a 3-2 lead with 4:53 left in the second.

Dubielewicz came up big during the power play as he stopped eight shots to help the Islanders keep the lead.

The Rangers tied the game again at the 4:20 mark of the third period. Jagr grabbed the puck in his own end and made a nice move to get into the open. On a 2-on-1 break, Jagr fed the disc from the right side to Martin Straka, who immediately gave the puck back to Jagr for a wrister past Dubielewicz.

Game Notes:

Jagr, who has scored six goals in his last seven games, has 59 goals and 82 assists in 91 games against the Islanders in his career...The Islanders took five of the eight games against the Rangers this season...The Rangers finished the home portion of their season with a 25-14-2 mark...The Rangers finished 0-for-8 on the power play while the Islanders went 0-for-3.
