Fleury Signs Big Extension With Penguins

POSTED: 2:07 pm EDT July 3, 2008
UPDATED: 3:26 pm EDT July 3, 2008

Marc-Andre Fleury will mind the Penguins' net for the next seven seasons.

Fleury, who became a restricted free agent on July 1, signed a seven-year extension worth $35 million.

The Penguins offered Fleury salary arbitration in late June to keep him off the free-agency market. With arbitration, Pittsburgh retained the right to be the only team allowed to negotiate a contract with the young goaltender.

The 23-year-old net minder is the third core player that general manager Ray Shero has signed since the start of free agency.

Shero also signed center Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Brooks Orpik to long-term deals earlier in the week.

Fleury was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NHL entry draft and was a large reason why the Penguins were so successful in the 2008 playoffs. After missing 27 games in 2008 due to a high ankle sprain, Fleury finished the regular season with 19 wins, four shutouts and a 2.33 goals against average with a .921 save percentage.
