Kolzig Not Returning To Caps

POSTED: 2:04 pm EDT May 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig has said that he will not be returning to the team he has spent his entire NHL career with, according to a report on Friday.

Kolzig told the Washington Post that he was disappointed when the Capitals acquired goaltender Cristobal Huet from the Montreal Canadiens and he was later demoted to backup through the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs.

The 2000 Vezina Trophy winner has spent his entire 17-year NHL career with Washington and helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 1998. In 711 games he has 301 wins, 293 losses, 63 ties and 23 overtime losses along with 35 shutouts and a 2.70 goals against average.

Kolzig, who has played internationally for Germany, went 25-21-6 with a 2.91 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage in 54 appearances this season. He is still deciding whether he will retire or sign with another club.
