Carcillo's First Career Hat Trick Leads Coyotes Past Stars

POSTED: 12:38 am EDT April 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Daniel Carcillo tallied his first career hat trick as the Phoenix Coyotes held off the Dallas Stars, 4-2, at American Airlines Center.

Marty Turco stopped 17 shots in the loss for Dallas, which will face Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs as the fifth seed. The loss ensured home- ice advantage for Anaheim.

Trevor Daley and Philippe Boucher each lit the lamp for the Stars, who had won two of three coming into the game.

"We know we have to play better and address some of the stuff going on in our game,"said Boucher. "It's nowhere near what we're going to show our fans comeplayoff time."

Martin Hanzal scored a goal while Mikael Tellqvist stopped 30 shots for the Coyotes, who stopped a three-game slide.

"It's a pretty special night and I haven't had one in a couple of years since Juniors," said Carcillo about the hat trick. "First career hat trick in the NHL, its a pretty good feeling."

With the score tied in the second period, Hanzal gave the Coyotes the lead. Zbynek Michalek sprung Hanzal on a breakaway with an outlet pass and Hanzal slid the disc between the pads of Turco for a 3-2 lead with 6:47 left in the second.

Tellqvist came up with several big saves in the third period and Carcillo completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal in the final seconds of the game.

Phoenix grabbed the lead just 2:51 into the game as Carcillo grabbed a turnover in the neutral zone, skated down the right side and fired a wrister into the back of the net.

Dallas answered with 1:50 left in the first as Steve Ott centered the puck to Daley, who tipped the puck past Tellqvist from down low.

On the power play, the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead at the 3:39 mark of the second. Steve Reinprecht caused Mike Modano to turn over the puck got it to Carcillo, who blasted a shot from the left circle that beat Turco on the glove side.

The Stars, though, answered shorthanded just 1:01 later to tie the game as Boucher took a pass from Stu Barnes and beat Tellqvist with a shot to the glove side.
