Report: Hartsburg To Coach Senators

Ottawa, ON -- (Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators are reportedly set to name Craig Hartsburg their new head coach.The Sault Star reports Hartsburg flew to Ottawa Thursday to meet with Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and will be introduced Friday as the team's next head coach. Currently the head coach of Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League, the 48-year-old Hartsburg led the Greyhounds to 44 victories and a second-place regular season finish in the Western Conference this past season. The Greyhounds lost in the conference finals. Hartsburg brings with him plenty of coaching experience at the NHL level. It includes three seasons as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks and 2 1/2 seasons with Anaheim. Between his stints as head coach of the Greyhounds, Hartsburg spent two seasons as assistant coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. General manager Bryan Murray held a dual role as head coach late last season after the Senators fired John Paddock. The Senators finished in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and were swept in the first round of the playoffs by Pittsburgh. A first-round draft pick of the North Stars in 1979, Hartsburg played his entire pro career for Minnesota, compiling 98 goals and 315 assists in 570 games until his final season in 1988-89. Hartsburg was head coach of the Blackhawks from 1995-98 and then was with the Ducks the following 2 1/2 seasons. He then was head coach of the Greyhounds in 2001-02 before going to the Flyers as an assistant, and has been back at Sault Ste. Marie since 2004.
