Posted: 4:55 pm EDT July 9, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman, who was picked second overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year rookie contract.

Hedman played for Modo of the Swedish Elite League last season, posting seven goals and 21 points in 43 contests. The 18-year-old, who comes from the same hometown as Peter Forsberg and Markus Naslund, earned rookie of the year honors for his performance.

"We are thrilled to be able to take this next step with Victor today," said Lightning general manager Brian Lawton. "He has a bright future and we intend on him being a member of the Lightning for a long time. We are excited to get his signing behind us so he can solely focus on hockey and the continued development of his game."

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Hedman also helped Sweden win a pair of silver medals at the last two World Junior Championships.
