PITTSBURGH -- The Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania is observing its tenth annual National Work Zone Awareness Week that will begin on Monday and end on April 13.Work Zone Awareness Week was started by the Federal Highway Administration in 2000 and is supported by a large network of government and industry partners. The focus of the billboard campaign is to highlight the dangers to workers and motorists when driving through construction work zones. To help raise the public’s awareness of the dangers of driving though work zones, CAWP put together a billboard campaign comprised of children’s artwork, stressing the importance of work zone safety.Children ages 5-12 participated. The contest was open to children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews of CAWP Contractor members. Entries were to depict the child’s parent or relative working safely on a highway construction project. Each of the 12 winning entries from the contest will be featured on a billboard for Work Zone Awareness Week. The four first-place entries will be displayed on a traditional billboard for the entire month of April, with locations including Route 422 in Ebensburg, Route 119 in Normalville, Wayne Avenue in Indiana and I-70 in Smithton. The remaining eight will be placed on digital boards from Monday through April 12 on the Parkway West, Parkway East and I-279 North. The Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania is a trade association representing over 200 heavy, highway, railroad and utility construction and construction-related companies in the 33 counties of western Pennsylvania. For the past 75 years, CAWP has been assisting contractors collectively by addressing issues important to them, such as adequate transportation funding, competitive labor markets, and a well-trained workforce.
