Game Six - Bad luck for Fleury on Detroit's third goal of the game - Zetterberg's shot trickles through Fleury's legs and when he sits back freeze the puck, he knocks it in with his backside!

Could Hossa be the one or maybe Crosby comes up big - one way or another the Penguins have twenty minutes to find a hero!

How about Tyler Kennedy with his first of the playoffs!

Power play goal - Malkin with a blast and its 2-1 and the Pens are back in the game.

Six minutes left in the 2nd period Pens down 2-0 thanks to a Valterri Filppula goal.

Pens need a goal by the end of the 2nd Period - Detroit could go into clamp down mode and it would be over.

Great chance for Pens they are going on the power-play with 5:38 left in the period - Datsyuk in the box.

The Penguins played a solid first but they trail the Red Wings 1-0.

The goal came on the power-play when Brian Rafalski's shot deflected off of Hal Gill's leg.

The Penguins had a golden opportinity to even it up but couldn't convert on the two man advantage.

Evgeni Malkin has some jump in his step and the Penguins put some good pressure on Chris Osgood we'll see if that combination can get it done.

The Road to the Stanley Cup is a long one, at least one game longer than the Detroit Red Wings had hoped.

On the cover of the Detroit Free Press the headline in bold black simply read: DENIED.

In Mitch Albom's cover story he discribed Max Talbot's equalizer this way: ''with the goalie pulled, with 35 seconds left - Pittburgh's Maxime Talbot slammed a rebound in past Chris Osgood's left foot, and the crowd, still standing, became 20,000 people who looked as if they had just witnessed an execution.

Great writing.

Hockeytown is hurting today but as the Penguins told me and anyone else that cared to listen - game five means nothing without a game six victory.

Stanley Cup Finals -- Game Six

The Penguins have talked about the character they have in their room all season. It was on full display in game six!

For starters, Malone and Gonchar playing through injury. After the game Gonchar told me he was unable to play for a few periods because he was suffering back spasms from crashing into the boards. The spams would not allow him to breathe.

Malone's face ... well, it has looked better but Ryan played on and following the game did interviews with everyone when he probably should have had ice on his face.

What about Malkin and Sykora? To say they were struggling against the Red Wings would be an under statement. Both had been taken out of the series by the Red Wings defense but they showed up big with game winning goal!

The thrilling win doesn't mean much if the Penguins don't back it up with a home win Wednesday but it did keep hope alive in the Penguins room and they say they are ready to take their chances Wednesday night in the Igloo!

Game Six - 2nd OT - Fleury has been amazing tonight if anyone ever says he isn't a big time goaltender, they don't know what they are watching.

Wow! What a finish!

The Joe was ready to celebrate - on my way down to the Penguins room the Championship T-Shirts were being wheeled into place and the Champagne was in the Red Wings lockerroom.

It was all moved out when Max Talbot scored the Penguins third of the game to tie it at 3-3!

Overtime -here we go!

Monday, 6/2 -- 10:05 PM

Game Six - The 2nd Period was a costly one for the Penguins, yes they gave up a goal that cut their lead to 2-1 but it was really more about the unexpected injuries to Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Malone.

Gonchar could be done for the night with a concussion or shoulder injury. He caught a rut in the ice with his skate and crashed head first into the boards.

Ryan Malone is not having a good time in Detroit - in game one he broke his nose when he was hit by Nicklas Kronvall - tonight he took a puck to the face, it was a Hal Gill slap shot that got him while he was in front of the net.

Malone went right to the bench with blood pouring from his face.

Game Six -Before tonight's game the Big 29er Phil Bourque told me Marc-Andre Fleury could win tonight's game by himself. So far Fleury has been great. He has turned away all 8 Red Wings shots.

Bourque was also looking for a garbage goal or two - He got one when Nicklas Kronvall shot the puck off of Adam Hall's skate and into his own net.

Hossa picks up the first goal of the game.

It wasn't real pretty but a 2-0 lead when your facing elimination isn't bad!

Sunday, 6/1 -- 6 PM
Stanley Cup Final -- Back on the road to the Stanley Cup!

The Red Wings took a commanding three games to one lead in the Cup Final - thanks to a 2-1 win Saturday night in Pittsburgh.

Many of the Penguins fans are counting the Pens out! Following last night's game I heard a couple of fans say football season is just around the corner.

The Penguins are down and they know the odds are aginst them but they will not give up on themselves.

Character is something the Penguins talk about a lot during the season - Monday the Penguins character will be on display for all the hockey world to see.

I expect a solid game five from the Penguins - remember Dallas beat Detroit in Detroit in game five of the Western Conference Final.

Never say Never!

We are just about five miles from Toledo, Ohio..... Listening to the Best Buy 400 on Richard's Sirius Sat. Radio! Kyle Bush takes the checkered flag - it is Bussh's fourth win of the season! Richard says he could take him - especially in a news car!

Game Five of the Cup Finals is set for Monday at 8 p.m. on WPXI and don't forget our 11 on the Ice Stanley Cup Special which starts at 7 p.m.

3rd Period - The Penguins look like they are in trouble here in the third - Jiri Hudler gets his 6th goal of the playoffs but it's the Red Wings work in the neutral zone that has been very impressive! They are just halting the Penguins offense before it gets going here in the 3rd Period.

Game Four - No scoring in the 2nd Period but plenty of hitting! The biggest hit of the period belonged to Gary Roberts! The chants of Gary! Gary! Gary! started immediately following the hit.

The Penguins have been a very good 3rd Period team this year - they will have play their best 3rd period of the year if they don't want to go back to Detroit down 3 games to 1.

Ready to start the 2nd Period.

The Steelers love their Penguins... I saw Ben Roethlisberger at game three and tonight in the front row along the boards near the Red Wings runway Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin is watching game four in his Sidney Crosby jersey along with Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert.

I haven't seen him but kicker Jeff Reed - a Pens season ticket holder is usually on hand.

No Pirates on hand tonight they are in St. Louis beating up on the Cards 12-1 in the 6th.

Still 1-1 ... Five minutes into the second period!

Game Four - So far this postseason if the Penguins score the first goal they are unbeatable posting an 11-0 record.

The Penguins collected the first goal of game four when Marian Hossa stuffed home a power play goal. Sergei Gonchar and Sidney Crosby picked up assists.

The Penguins didn't hold the 1-0 lead for long - Nicklas Lidstrom the Red Wings Captain leaned into a slap shot that Marc-Andre Fleury never saw and it was 1-1.

Both team are playing very physical hockey.

The Penguins in my opinion turned the puck over too many times in the first period - they need to correct that or it will come back and get them in the end.

Stanley Cup Finals Game Three --

What a difference a few days make!

The Penguins looked like the team that rolled through the Eastern Conference in Game Three of the Cup Finals against the Red Wings. One game doesn't win a series but it does give the Penguins a much needed shot of confidence - they now know they can skate with and beat the Red Wings.

After the game three win, the Penguins locker-room was a happy room but a calm room. Every player was keeping the win in perspective - they all know they have to play even better in game four Saturday night if they want to even the series at two games a piece.

The Penguins and the Red Wings have media availabilities set for Thursday morning, 10:45 a.m. for the Wings and 11:30 a.m. for the Penguins.

Game four of the Stanley Cup Finals will be played at 8 p.m. Saturday night on WPXI.

Game Three - Crosby again early in the second period to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead, I guess Coach Therrien was right - Crosby can produce against anyone.

The Red Wings won't go easily, the Mule - Johan Franzen scores on a great individual effort to make it 2-1.

Malkin who was a no show in games one and two has played well tonight.

Stanley Cup Final

Game Three - It took almost seven full periods of hockey before the Penguins scored their first goal of the Finals but they did get on the board courtesy of the Captain Sidney Crosby.

After the morning skate Penguins Head Coach Michel Therrien was asked about Sidney Crosby's production against the Wings - Therrien became a bit irritated and said Crosby will produce against anyone.

Tonight he has and the Penguins lead after the 1st - 1-0!

Stanley Cup Finals -- Driving through Toledo as we head home from Detroit, where the Redwings beat the Penguins in games one and two of the Finals.

Game two of the Finals saw the Redwings dominate the Penguins in every phase of the game.

The Redwings became just the fifth team in Stanley Cup Finals history to post back to back shutout wins.

The following the game the Penguins were confident they can turn the series around when they play game three in the Igloo.

Ryan Malone told me that he thinks the fans will have an impact when they bring the noise Wednesday.

To keep noise cranked the Penguins must score first , they are 10-0 this postseason when the score first. Detroit is now 12-1 when they score first!

Game Two - A Sunny day in Detroit as game two of the Stanley Cup Finals closes in!

Detroit's Johan Franzen is still question mark for game two as he continues to recover from a concussion.

The Penguins are as healthy as they could hope at this time of year - they hit the ice for their morning skate at 11:30. Its been a very good workout.

Max Talbot is always having fun he just scored a goal and did a celebration even though it was just a drill - the Penguins would like to see the same thing early in game two.

Hockeytown - Detroit ? I don't think so, maybe in years past but not anymore!

The Red Wings have struggled to sell playoff tickets this year including the finals.

Tonight, we were going to report from the famous Hockeytown Café that has the Red wings logo on top of the building - did report from outside the café, but we couldn't eat in it because it was closed at 7:30. I know it's a Sunday night, but the Red wings are in the Cup finals and the Hockeytown Café isn't open on a holiday weekend!

Hockeytown - please!

The Hockeytown name should go to Pittsburgh - record sellouts and 13,000 fans so up to watch game one of the Finals.

After suffering their first game one loss of the postseason, the Penguins were back on the ice today for practice.

The Penguins showed off some new line combinations - Crosby, Malone, and Hossa - Malkin, Talbot, and Sykora - Staal, Dupuis, and Kennedy - Ruutu, Hall and Roberts.

After the workout, Penguins Head Coach Michel Therrien said the team would make some line changes but that they may change again at Monday's morning skate.

The Penguins all said they can play much better than they did in game one and they expect to bounce back big in game two.

Since the NHL went to the seven game format back in 1939 - 15 teams have come back after losing game one of the finals to win the Cup!

The Penguins did it in 1991!

90 miles to Toledo on the Road To The Stanley Cup!

Toledo is also the home of or it least it was the Storm - the Redwings ECHL affiliate. Tough team when I was covering the ECHL final between the Storm and the Wheeling Thunderbirds - the name change to Wheeling Nailers came later.

Tough crowd at the Storm games maybe it was because they sold hard drinks during the games! I mean the hard stuff .... Like Jack and don't worry about the Coke!

The Storm beat the Thunderbirds that year- some great games on WTOV-9 in Steubenville. I remember one of the Thunderbirds players I was interviewing during an intermission getting ready to go into the stands to fight a couple of fans after we were hit with quarters!

Those were fun times! Memories on the Road to the Stanley Cup!

He will be doing special segments with Mr. Oxenreiter and myself.

Alby will agree with this - everytime we have done an interview with Phil this year he is right on the money - in terms of how the games will go and what the Penguins will have to do to win.

The things you see on the Road to the Stanley Cup!

We haven't seen it before this postseason but we just passed the one and only Alby Oxenreiter or as I like to call him the next Mayor of Pittsburgh - I would put Alby's handshaking skills up against any politicians - maybe Senator Oxenreiter! Has a nice ring to it!

The only thing that is a bit odd is that he has Tim Holoman his fantastic photographer, driving while he sits in back eating calamari!

It is Memorial Day weekend so slow down if you are heading to Motown - the police in Ohio are out in force!

Not that I'm keeping count but two drivers have been pulled over on the Road to The Stanley Cup and they didn't look happy about it!

On the road again!

The road to the Stanley Cup Finals for the Penguins is just one big turnpike between Philadelphia and Detroit. Headed east to watch the Penguins eliminate the Flyers, this week we head west to see if the Penguins can skate past the Redwings.

The traveling party has grown - throughout the postseason it has been myself and photographer Richard or Rich and Richard.

It’s the Cup Finals, so we are traveling seven in all.

Management is happy not just at the double ones but at every media outlet Western Pennsylvania because a trip to Motown is less expensive than lets say a trip to Dallas!

Watch for our coverage of the Cup Finals on WPXI.com, WPXI, Fox 53, and PCNC.

Don't forget games 3 thru 7 can be seen only WPXI Channel 11.

The Penguins took the ice for their first Stanley Cup Finals practice at 10:47 a.m. Gary Roberts was the first player on the ice.

The Penguins began their workout with a few drills to warm-up. They are currently playing a game of four on four.

It is a very similar workout to the ones the team held leading up to their series with the Rangers and Flyers. Don't change what you are doing as long as it works!

More of the same to start the 3rd Period - The Penguins have more jump and want ... And another Marian Hossa goal - his tenth of the playoffs and second of the game give the Penguins a 6-0 lead.

What about the Flyers ? The Penguins are playing a great game but they haven't showed up at all!

It was just announced that the Hossa goal belongs to Dupuis who must have touched the puck on the way by while he was screening Biron.

After the 2nd Period of play its the Penguins 5-0 over the Flyers and it isn't that close.

The Penguins have out-played the Flyers at both ends of the ice. Anything the Flyers had for the Penguins was used up in game four.

The headlines will focus on the Pens offense but the defense has been outstanding... Limiting the Flyers to 13 shots... Marc-Andre Fleury has made five or six tremendous saves.

Its all over!

The Penguins said they needed to move the puck more and out skate the Flyers if they wanted to win game five.

The Penguins did just that in the first period and lead the Flyers 2-0 on goals from Malone and Malkin.

If the Penguins continue to play the same way in the second and third periods they will be in the Stanley Cup Final.

Tradition - like every home game before this one Max Talbot and Marc-Andre Fleury have bounced off of each other like pinballs before taking the ice in the players runway - game five featured more of the same.

Flyers Defenseman Kimmo Timonen who was out with a blood clot in his leg was in the starting lineup. Braydon Coburn who was out with a nasty gash over his left eye was a scratch and apparently so upset that he didn't stay for the game and flew home to Philly.

Penguins on the Power play - the Penguins take advantage of the man advantage and score - Ryan Malone gets his fifth from Crosby and Hossa.

Penguins up 1-0 in the 1st....

The Flyers take game four ... 4 to 2...

Following the game the Penguins said they were unable to match the Flyers desperation.

"We let them play their game," Penguins defenseman Brooks OrpiK said... "if play at our pace they can't keep up with us but we didn't control the play and it cost us."

Game Five is set for Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh and you can see it on WPXI.

2nd Period - The Flyers haven't done much this period but - check that - Marty Biron is playing very well in goal.

The Penguins continue to struggle to get their offense going - they have had a few chances but overall they have been unable to play for an extended period of time like they did in games one through three.

The fans are all over Sidney Crosby with "Sidney Sucks" chants. Every team's fans do it - when will they realize that all they are doing is stoking his fire?

Flyers finish the second on the power play - they will be on it for the first 25 seconds of the third.

Flyers after two periods of play lead it 3-0.

2nd Period - The Penguins say it all the time, we just need to play our game, we can't worry about what the other team is going to do.

So far tonight the Penguins have not played their game and they have allowed the Flyers to play at their pace.

Still 3-0 midway through the second - looking like a real long night for the Penguins.

1st Period - Wow! The Penguins needed a kill and didn't get it. Jeff Carter who has been one of the Flyers best players all postseason long, gets the goal that makes it 3-0.

The Penguins were on their heels most of the period.

Remember the shots on goal advantage at 11 to 4? - well the final total for the period - 17 to 13.

The Flyers took it to the Penguins in the first - Rich Walsh told me he had a feeling the Flyers would take game four - it looks like he could be right.

1st Period - The Penguins talked about matching the Flyers desperation this morning - they haven't done it.

Don't get me wrong they are playing hard but the Flyers are playing their best period of hockey by far.

Even Daniel Briere is playing well tonight - Briere collected his 9th of the playoffs to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead but over the first three games he wasn't a factor.

Hal Gill is having a tough night - first the deflection off of his stick and then the much smaller Briere gets position on him and scores.

Flyers going on the Power Play with 2:50 left in the first - a must kill for the Pens. Orpik for roughing.

1st Period - 11 minutes left in the first and the Penguins are down 1-0 on Joffrey Lupul goal - his shot deflected off of Hal Gill's stick.

The Penguins have out shot the Flyers 11 to 4 at this point.

1st Period - The Flyers fans know the season is on the line tonight - they are amazingly loud - it's as if they feel like they will be able to will the Flyers to a win.

Fleury made a great save on Scott Hartnell to keep it 0-0.

The Penguins and Flyers have taken the ice for warm-ups.

Two players both teams would love to have in their line-ups will not play.

Penguins Forward Gary Roberts is out with what the Penguins are calling a mild case of pneumonia. The Penguins expect him to be available later this postseason.

Flyers Defenseman Braydon Coburn had hoped to return from an eye injury he suffered in game two of the series when a puck struck him in the face near his left eye. It took fifty stitches to close the gash around his eye. Coburn practiced Wednesday but the eye isn't good enough to allow him to play.

Jordan Staal returned from a trip home following the death of his Grandfather. Staal says he is ready to go.

Hossa gets the empty netter and the Penguins take 3 games to none lead over the Flyers thanks to their 4-1 win.

After the game, I asked the Penguins players about being just one win away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final. None of them wanted to talk about it - they all said they can't look ahead like that!

They’ve done that throughout the postseason and they are now 11 and 1 overall and just a Thursday night win from the Cup Final.

2nd Period - The Penguins and Flyers will head to the third period with the Penguins on top 2-1.

The 2nd Period was dominated by defense. The Flyers held the Penguins to just 9 shots, not bad. But how about the Penguins defense allowing the Flyers just 3 second period shots and through two periods of play just 8 total shots.

The best player on the ice through two - Marian Hossa. He has played well at both ends of the ice.

1st Period - The period is over and the Penguins lead 2-1 on goals from Ryan Whitney and Marian Hossa.

Before the game began the Flyers honored a fallen policeman, Stephen Liczbinski, who was killed in the line of duty on May 3rd. He was a big Flyers fan. After his son delivered the eulogy he asked the people in attendance to do a Flyers chant for his father and the entire church did.

Liczbinski and his family received a very loud and long ovation.

Kudos as they say to the Flyers organization on the tribute.

1st Period - Just about ten minutes into the first and the Penguins have sucked the air right out of the Wachovia Center with goals from Whitney and Hossa.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Ryan Whitney's power play goal deflected in off of Flyers’ Captain Jason Smith. Whitney was looking to pass when the puck went in. Sidney Crosby and Sergei Gonchar get helpers.

A few moments later Marian Hossa picks up his seventh of the playoffs on a break. He danced through a number of Flyers defenders to make it 2-0. Crosby gets a helper.

R.J Umberger and the Flyers come back as he gets his tenth of the playoffs. He is a relative of Rich Walsh.

Not sure if that helps or hurts R.J.! Just kidding Rich.

The Flyers have carried the action in the first but the Penguins lead 2-1 with 8:10 to go in the 1st period.

The Penguins will not have Gary Roberts in the line-up for tonight’s game, he has been scratched, and Adam Hall will take his spot. Roberts who assisted on game two's game winning goal wasn't feeling well this morning and did not take part in the morning skate.

You are told how tough the Philadelphia fans can be - well they seem ready for game three - during the Penguins line-up announcement they didn't just boo, no that wouldn't be good enough, they yelled out sucks after every Penguins' player name.

The Penguins have taken the ice and the boos are raining down!

The Penguins and Flyers have just left the ice following their warm-ups for game three.

The Penguins had a whiteout in Pittsburgh tonight get ready to see all of the Flyers orange you can take - every fan has been given an orange shirt for tonight’s game - they also picked up thunder sticks at the door.

Richard isn't allowed in the press box tonight - I suspect he will find his way into prime location to watch the game.

Game three is just around the corner.

Jordan Staal of the Penguins will play the rest of the postseason with a heavy heart. Staal's Grandfather passed away but Staal will play in game three tonight.

Staal will travel home to be with his family Wednesday but will return in time for game four.

Gary Roberts wasn't feeling well this morning so he did not take part in the morning skate and his playing status is up in the air for tonight’s game. Adam Hall would replace Roberts in the line-up.

The Penguins are on the ice here in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center for their morning skate.

Nothing too intense just getting their legs going - the Flyers don't practice here on game days; they workout at their team facility in New Jersey.

This is my first time in the Wachovia Center - it’s a very nice building.

The fans we have talked to here in Philly think their Flyers can come back.

It doesn't look like Braydon Coburn of the Flyers will - if you recall he was hit in the face with a puck in game two... He has a bad gash near his eye which is swollen shut.

Max Talbot wanted nothing more than to get on the ice and help his team in the Eastern Conference Final. Broken foot or not - he got his chance tonight in game two and with 45 seconds to go - the Penguins energy forward may have the game winning goal.

He will - Jordan Staal has just put the puck in an empty net - Penguins on top 4-to-2.

Talbot wanted to bring the energy and he did - Penguins win!

The Penguins lead the series two games to none.

If you like playoff hockey - no matter which team you are pulling for in the Eastern Conference Final that was a great second period. It had a little bit of everything.

Marian Hossa puts the Penguins up 2 to 1 and it looks like the Penguins maybe able to really take the Flyers out of the game ....... it doesn't happen - the Flyers come back Mike Richards turns a turnover into a goal.

If your a Penguins fan - you can't question the heart of the Flyers.

I don't know but if the Flyers continue to take penalties they will be blown out of the Igloo. They put themselves on the 5 on 3 penalty kill and the Penguins didn't wait long to put the puck in the net.

It is amazing to me that more players don't take a puck or a stick in the face - Braydon Coburn of the Flyers took a puck to the face - blood on the ice never a good thing.

The energy has just been lifted by Scottie Upshall and Tyler Kennedy are trading fists. It looked like Upshall would take a decision but Kennedy comes back and takes it on the scorecard.

Wild start to game two - the teams that keeps its cool will win this one.

The National Hockey League forced me to cut the grass in the rain today. I will be leaving with my photographer - Richard - in the morning for Philadelphia, we will be gone for the entire week so something had to be done or the grass would have been three feet high when I got back.

I could have cut the grass Saturday but I was out with my daughter getting ready for Mother's day and didn't get it done so I cut the grass in the rain. It wasn't to bad until the lightning started but what is a little lightning - it was enough to get me inside for about 10 minutes.

The grass is done and looks good so maybe I should be thanking the NHL.

I don't know if they really need one but the Penguins should get a lift tonight from Max Talbot. The Penguins Forward is set to return to the line-up after recovering enough from a broken foot. Talbot suffered the injury during Game Three of the Penguins second round series with the New York Rangers while blocking a shot.

Talbot is an energy guy and he plays very well on the Penguins penalty killing unit. Talbot thinks he should be able to play 16 or 17 minutes. To make room for Talbot in the line-up tonight Adam Hall will be scratched.

The Penguins can take a two games to none lead in the best of seven series with a win.

The Big Screen in front of the Mellon arena is quickly becoming the place to be... With a very good chance for rain a few hundred Penguins fans have already gathered to watch tonight's playoff game. If it doesn't rain it could be a few thousand.

The organist here at the Igloo is warming up - still no players on the ice.

Earlier today I spoke with Sidney Crosby's Dad Troy - he says Sidney is superstitious, so much so that he won't talk to his Mom on game days so his Mom shouldn't expect a Mother's day call.

Whatever works! Mr. Crosby says Sidney just needs to work all game to have success.

Eastern Conference Finals - Game One - Flyers vs. Penguins

Morning skate: The Penguins are ready to go, today's morning skate was set to start at 10:30 a.m. but the Penguins players were on the ice at 10:20 a.m.

Even from the first two rounds of the playoffs there is a different energy at today's skate. Not a nervous energy but energy that is confident - lots of smiles on the Penguins.

The Penguins took the ice for practice at 11 a.m. and all of the teams players are on the ice except Max Talbot.

Talbot is hopeful his foot injury will heal enough by game one Friday to play.

Practice has been full of drills the require end to end skating. Coach Therrien is making sure his team keeps its condition.

Marc-Andre Fleury, the Penguins goaltender, was just runover by three of his teammates ... Practice came to a stop .... Everyone was fine.

I'm sure that will happen to Fleury a few more times over the next couple of weeks.

The media group at Penguins practice is bigger than usual - no surprise there with each passing round it will continue to grow.

Local media outlets are sending about the same number of people but a few extra writers have come down to the Igloo and the out of town folks are starting to show up from Ohio, West Virginia and Philadelphia.

The TSN reporter out of Canada will be on the road following the Penguins and Flyers for the next 19 days before he goes home.

Post-Practice :
While the team's fans and media are reveling in the fact that arch rivals Philadelphia and Pittsburgh will meet in the NHL's Eastern Conference Final, the Penguins following today's optional skate said it wouldn't have mattered which team was in front of them at this point.

One player that doesn't seem to be a little more excited than most about playing the Flyers in Defensemen Ryan Whitney, he says the two teams have a healthy dislike for each other but also a respect for how they play the game.

Sidney Crosby doesn't think the series will be one big brawl - he says the both teams have to be disciplined because it is to costly to take penalties.

The Penguins have torched the Flyers this year when they have had the man advantage.

Game One of the best of seven series is set for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Igloo.

The Penguins will be back on the ice Wednesday for an 11 a.m. workout.

The Penguins first practice since clinching a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Philadelphia Flyers is an optional skate.

It is optional, but very well attenned - in all 21 players are on the ice.

One notable exception is Max Talbot who missed the final two games of the Rangers serious with a foot injury after blocking a shot in game three.

Following Sunday's game with the Rangers Talbot told me the foot is feeling better and the fews days off between series will help the foot heal.

So far today's practice has featured a game of four on four. The Black jerseys are currently beating the White jerseys 2-1.

I was over at the Steelers Complex for Mini Camp this morning Big Ben did practice after missing Saturday's workout. First round pick Rashard Mendenhall didn't because of a sore hamstring. Sorry - the reason I started to write about the Steelers was the fact a couple of players told me to get the Penguins to win the series today - I don't know how I will do that but I will figure something out. Scott Paxson who hails from Philadelphia told Jason Capizzi who is a Pittsburgh guy the Flyers will take the Penguins in five games if they meet in the Eastern Conference Final.

The Penguins and Rangers have hit the ice for warm-ups. Game Five in just about twenty minutes.

Fired the painter!

As you may recall in my last couple blogs my wife and mother-in-law were picking out paint for the kitchen. It took a while but they final found something they liked. They thought everything would be ready for the painter but the painter started having issues so the painter is gone.

Does anyone know a good painter?

What about the game?

Do the Rangers have the heart to comeback in this series? Maybe, but I don't think it will happen. The Penguins showed everyone that they have the killer instinct in Ottawa and I think they will find a way to eliminate the Rangers tonight.

Don't look now but the Penguins are looking at back to back playoff series sweeps.

Jagr was great, and the Rangers came at the Penguins with everything they had, but for a third straight game it wasn't enough.

Malkin with two goals and Malone, the hometown Penguin, gets the big third period goal. Fleury proving to everyone he is a big time goaltender.

The Penguins go for the sweep Thursday night!

My wife and mother-in-law can be found in the kitchen testing paint colors.

My son is making as much noise as possible with an electric car, while my daughter, who is battling a cough, reads me the book Stellaluna, which is about a bat.

All that -- while I watch the game or bits of it as we go.

From what I saw the Penguins have all the answers and it starts not with their offensive weapons but goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury who is playing well again tonight.

When Georges Laraque scores you know things are going your way - Pens 3-to-1 after one period - have to run and give a paint color opinion.

The Penguins held an optional practice at the Mellon Arena before leaving for New York this afternoon.

Sidney Crosby skated early before the 11:30 a.m. optional skate time.

13 players were on the ice for the optional skate. The skate ended with six players (4 skaters and 2 goaltenders) playing a game with the nets pushed up against the boards in one end of the rink.

Gary Roberts was one of the skaters in the game of 3 on 3. He is still a question mark for game three in New York tomorrow night, but it looks promising for the veteran. Roberts wouldn't do any interviews but did tell a group of reporters I was with that he expected to make a decision on his status for game three after Tuesday's morning skate. Roberts has been bothered by a sore groin.

The Penguins are winless in Madison Square Garden this year. Sidney Crosby said today that a couple of those loses came before Christmas when the Penguins were struggling - he feels the Penguins team that will skate in New York in Tuesday night will be ready to play and ready to win.

3rd Period - The Penguins take advantage of a big break - the Rangers goal which was waved off should counted, it didn't and the Penguins go onto a 2-0 win and a two games to none lead in the series.

No fights in the second period but the Penguins did get onto the scoreboard thanks to a Jordan Staal (pp) goal.

Friday the Penguins were able to come from behind to win - the question today is can they hold a lead.

Scott Gomez told me after Friday's game that the Rangers were not concerned about their failure to hold the lead because they just need to take one game here in Pittsburgh - maybe he didn't realize that might be the Rangers best chance at a win.

Now the Rangers have to find a way to comeback.

Marc-Andre Fleury has been solid making 19 saves - credit his defense for playing well in front of him.

It is however starting to get very chippy. We will have at least one fight by the end of the game. Just a feeling I have.

2nd Period - Credit Ruutu with the turn around! I don't know if they showed it on television but right before Ruutu's goal - Jarkko was on the face-off circle with Michal Roszsival of the Rangers and he was holding the blade of his stick in Rozsival's face - a linesman came over and warned him but he just kept doing it finally one of the refs skated over and got in his face and told him he would kick him out of the game - the gestures he was making with his hands told the story of the conversation.

Ruutu put his stick down and a few moments later he scored the Penguins first goal - he brings the energy and tonight the spark for the Penguins.

A few seconds later that energy carried over to Pascal Dupuis who fired in the Penguins second of the night.

1st Intermission - The television monitor just came on in front of me with Pirates/Phillies game - 4-to- 0 Phillies . Check that... a double to the gap, 5-to-0 Phillies.

Painful!

1st Period - Would the Penguins have any rust after a nine day break between rounds one and two? Yes, and so did the Rangers after an eight day break.

Uneven play from both teams at best.

Despite that fact the Penguins used the crowd's energy to dominate the action early, but Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was up to the task.

No surprise - Jagr gets booed every time he touches the puck.

Tough first period for Ryan Whitney of the Penguins - he gave the puck away a couple of times and takes a penalty that leads to the first goal of the game - Martin Straka from Jaromir Jagr.

The goal is the first Marc-Andre Fleury has allowed in the first period this postseason.

The crowd provided the Penguins with a tremendous amounts of energy in the first period. The whiteout seems to be a big hit.

The Penguins are playing with the energy and passion they need, they just need to tighten things up.

Friday, 4/25 -- 6 PM

A fresh sheet of ice has been put down. None of the players for either team have found their way to the ice.

The fans have just started to file into the Igloo and everyone is in white for tonight's white out!

The fans have no doubts and expect a big win - one fan just shouted at me - ALL THE WAY PENGUINS!

Friday, 4/25 -- 5 PM

We wrote about the cooling system for the ice here at Mellon Arena in our last blog - well that cooling system is on high trying to keep the Igloo cold.

Just ran into two time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque and he says that's the way he likes it. He says the ice should be as hard as nickels.

A soft ice surface helps nobody and can become dangerous for the players.

Game One is just a few hours away!

Round two is upon us! It seemed like it would never arrive.

The Penguins and New York Rangers will answer a number of questions tonight like:
Which team will handle the long break between rounds better?
Which goaltender has kept his edge during the break?
What adjustments have they made for each other since they last played at the end of the regular season?
How will Jagr handle playing against his old team? (This is the first time he has done that in the playoffs.)
Will the young Penguins fold under the greater pressure of the second round?
How do we stop global warming?
Which player will the Steelers take in the first round?

I don't really think they will answer the last two but you never know!

The Penguins should have some big support tonight. Big Ben Roethlisberger told me earlier this week he wants to be at all of the Penguins home games so look for the Steelers QB. It might be tough to spot him, thanks to an expected white out!

Speaking of weather, ice conditions could be a factor tonight thanks to the warm weather. The Penguins will try and counter that with some extra cooling systems.

It should be an exciting series!

Monday, 4/21 -- 6 PM

The Penguins held an off ice workout today at the Mellon Arena. The Penguins will hold a full practice Tuesday at 11 a.m.

At this point the Penguins still don't know which team they will face in the second round of the playoffs. The Boston Bruins could be that team if they beat Montreal tonight in Montreal.

Marc-Andre Fleury told me he will have a few teammates over to watch tonight's game seven between the Bruins and Canadians. I asked the Penguins goaltender what he thinks the goaltenders will go through tonight, he says he expects them to both play well but just one mistake could be the difference in advancing to the second round of the National Hockey League Playoffs.

The Penguins have already reached the second round so like the rest of us - they will just kick back and watch tonight's action.

Saturday, 4/19 -- 1 PM
The Penguins could know later tonight which team they will face in the next round of the playoffs but it seems like most of the players believe they will see the New York Rangers in round two. I asked a few players after today's practice if they find out tonight that it is the Rangers when will they start looking at tape - Ryan Malone said the two teams know each other so well that it won't be critical to look at game tape until it gets a little closer to game one.

To a man the Penguins were all very happy to have a couple of days off after their sweep of Ottawa. The rust question was asked today - the Penguins don't think it will be an issue to have a few days of before round two.

The Penguins will practice Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.

The Penguins took the ice 11:00 a.m. For their first practice since their sweep of Ottawa in the first round of the NHL Playoffs.

The majority of the practice was spent playing four on four hockey. The players were into it but also having a good time with it.

Back in the United States.

Crossing the Thousand Islands Region Bridge, one of the Canadian toll workers was telling us how good he thought last night's game was. He thinks the Penguins will win the Cup! We will find out soon enough.

Pittsburgh is just about six hours down the road and the second round of the NHL Playoffs is a few days away. So, at this point I would like to thank you for checking out the blog. We will blog again somewhere on the road to Stanley Cup.

I had hoped to blog about the Penguins SWEEP of the Senators last night when I arrived back at the hotel after our late shows but the hotel computers were down. Thanks for your patience. I really do appreciate it and thanks for checking out the blog.

The Ottawa fans were at their best last night, but their team just didn't have it. Early in the game the Senators weren't moving their feet and cruised through the zones. If it wasn't for Martin Gerber, the Senators goaltender, this series would have been really ugly.

The Penguins did exactly what they had to do. Sidney Crosby talked about the team taking care of the little things after the morning skate and they did exactly that in the game.

Marc-Andre Fleury was solid again making a number of big saves early, for the fourth straight game he did not allow a goal in the first period. After the game all of his teammates made a point to give Marc-Andre props.

The Penguins really do have scary young talent. After the game in the press conference, the two Penguins at the table were Marc-Andre Fleury and Sidney Crosby. I see them at practice and in games all the time but you don't really see them off ice together doing interviews and it just struck me how young they really are. I think they are maybe a combined 42 years old. They could play together for a long, long time and that is going to be very tough for all of the teams in the NHL.

So, what were the Senators thinking?

You know how teams will use movie clips to get the team and its fans cranked up? Well, Ottawa did that in game four. One clip was from the movie “We are Marshall” and that worked, but the first one didn't make any sense. It was from the movie "Miracle" and it featured the pre-game talk by Herb Brooks. Tremendous stuff but lets break this down.

1. "Miracle" is about the 1980 United States Hockey team that wins Olympic Gold.
2. At one point, Herb Brooks was the Head Coach of Penguins.

I just thought it was odd that Ottawa would use a story about a team from the United States and a speech from a former coach of the Penguins to inspire a team from Canada and its fans. I just don't get that one. I should have known the game was over when they played that clip.

Why did the Penguins win this series? A man after the game said they all said experience was the key. They learned from a year ago what the playoffs are all about and what you have to do as a team to have success in them. Last night they showed a killer instinct that could carry them a long way.

It is on to the second round of the NHL Playoffs for the Penguins!

Wednesday, 4/16 -- 3 PM
The Penguins held an optional skate before tonight's game with the Senators. Every player practiced, including Ryan Malone who did not practice Tuesday. He was given the day to rest some bumps and bruises. He told me all systems are go for tonight's game four.

The Penguins are very confident. Max Tolbot told me the Penguins need to be more desperate than Ottawa tonight even though it is the Senators facing elimination.

The message from Head Coach Michel Therrien today -- if his team continues to do what it has done throughout this series and his team will be fine.

Ottawa plans on putting its top line back together tonight. It's a line that features Captain Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza. It can be very productive, but the Penguins coaching staff will make no specific changes to counter that line.

One of the messages in the Penguins room is this - Good is the Enemy of Great. So far, the Penguins have been very good and from traveling with them this week it is easy to see they are relentless in their quest to be Great.

The Penguins can sweep tonight. The Penguins will hold their morning skate at 11:30 a.m. Ottawa Senators Captain Daniel Alfredsson says he expects to play. It should give Ottawa a lift as they try to stay alive in the 2008 playoffs.

Tuesday, 4/15 -- 10:30 PM
Some exciting action. I don't know if you saw it but what a great game in Boston - a 1-0 thriller that goes to Montreal. The Flyers looked impressive knocking off Washington. Wow! Are the Ducks all over the Stars early!

Heading back to the hotel now, I will be watching the late games from my room. If you love hockey, it doesn't get any better than being in Canada for the playoffs. It is wall-to-wall hockey.

We are back in Kanata at Jack Astor's. It's a bar and grill that has every hockey game you can find playing on what seems like 100 TV sets. We are ready to watch the Montreal/Boston game, the Flyers/Capitals game and some of the Dallas/Ducks game when it comes on in about an hour.

Done for the day. Time to get some dinner. Last year, Richard and I tried the Empire Grill, which is located just down the street from the United States Embassy. It was great last year so we are going back for more.

Richard goes with the pork tenderloin. He enjoys it and the rest of the meal very much.

I go with the Alberta Bison - try something new - very good! If you find yourself in Ottawa try the Empire Grill. Good service - great food.

We arrive in downtown - a busy day in the big city, but no one is talking about hockey. The hope that we've talked about is all but gone for the Senators fans so we don't here much hockey talk on the street. Inside the CBC building the Montreal fans are thrilled with their team and their chances to win it all.

They expect to see the Penguins down the playoff road.

Tuesday -- 3:30 PM
Richard and I are done putting together our packages for the early shows and we are on the road to downtown Ottawa and the CBC broadcast facilities.

It is a day full of Sunshine in Ottawa.

Tuesday -- 2 PM
The Penguins have to meet with the media. No earth shattering or sensational comments but you just get the feeling that they know exactly where they stand and what they have to do to move to the next round of the National Hockey League playoffs.

Ryan Whitney responding to my question about the state of the Senators said, "They are in a fragile state."

If the Penguins score first and grab an early lead game four could get ugly.

The Penguins take the ice for practice. As usual, they seem loose but focused. I'm sitting close enough to the ice that I can hear Penguins Head Coach Michel Therrien tell his players "Don't be your own worst enemy." It is a simple message, but a good one. If the Penguins just do what they are supposed to do, they should be able to close out Ottawa in four games.

The Explorer's brakes are fixed and we are ready to roll to Penguins practice at 1p.m. A big thank you to Kanata Ford getting the Explorer in and out so quickly.

We have not heard from the Ford dealership. We will need the Explorer in about an hour and a half so we can get to the Penguins afternoon skate, which is set for 1 p.m.

We will be blogging when and where we can. We will need to get some international service on the Treo so we don't have these same issues if the Penguins face Montreal down the road.

Tough times at home. Just took a call from my wife - I was able to pick up the phone this time - she is dealing with my little girl who is not feeling well. So much so that they spent part of last night in the hospital. Turns out everything is going to be just fine. She is tough! She got on the phone and told me she had to have a shot and that her brother spent the night next door.

It is fun to go on the road with the Penguins, Steelers, Pirates and Pitt and cover the big events, but it can be tough to be away from family.

It makes you realize how much you love your family.

At breakfast, I read the Ottawa paper and it appears that hope is dead. Everyone seems to be resigned to the fact that the Penguins will close out the Senators and that it may be better for all involved if it is done quickly - so they are looking for a sweep!

I respect what Senator Defenseman Chris Phillips said in the paper and not just because of his quality last name. He said the three games to none deficit is just an opportunity for something special to happen.

Hope is trying to be revived! I don't think it has much of a chance.

Richard and I took the Explorer to the Ford dealership. They were very helpful and got it right in and gave us a ride back to the hotel. We will wait for their call.

Wow - did that wake-up call come early. I couldn't pick the phone up to stop the phone from ringing. I think I slept on my right arm and my right hand was numb and when I tried to pick up the phone my hand didn't work and after taking three shots at picking up the phone, I just knocked the handset off of the phone. The handset went behind the nightstand so I had to dig that out while the wake-up call recording played over and over!

Experience pays off. A man said the Penguins were ready for whatever energy the Ottawa fans could throw at them in the first period and they were unfazed by Alfredsson's return. They always say it is about what we do not what the other team does.

After the game three win, I asked Marc-Andre Fleury how long he and his teammates would enjoy the win before focusing on game four. He said up until Tuesday's afternoon skate.

The Penguins are just one win away from claiming their first post-season series win since the 2001 NHL Playoffs.

The Penguins win 4-1. Jordan Staal and Marian Hossa both pick up goals. Postgame.

Bourque and Errey maybe wrong! Sidney Crosby has just opened the third period with a goal just 12 seconds in. It is the fastest goal in franchise history at the start of a period in the postseason. 2-1 Penguins.

Almost forgot, the second period ends tied at one. What a tremendous goal from the Penguins. From behind his own net Ryan Whitney hits Rob Scuderi with a pass. Scuderi hits Pascal Dupuis, Dupuis passes to Marian Hossa, Hossa makes a nice little pass to Max Talbot, who hits the back of the net. Great goal.

Just ran into Phil Bourque and Bob Errey. The Stanley Cup Champions tell me to get ready for overtime.

I don't get it - I never will. Why do people in this case Senators fans insist on booing and chanting nasty things at Sidney Crosby?

I know the fans believe it will get into his head and it will put him off of his game but it doesn't. It just sounds stupid. Ottawa's fans tried it last year and got taken to task in their own papers over it. They are back at it again tonight.

The booing doesn't make any sense and tonight they have gone over the top chanting "Sidney Sucks, Sidney Sucks" over and over - come on! He is a big boy and he can handle it, but it just sounds so rediculous.

To be fair, I don't agree with Penguins fans booing Jagr when he plays in the Igloo. He helped win two Stanley Cups and the team at the time could not keep him. He was going to get too much money as a free agent, so they traded him. It was just business. Don't tell me about a hometown discount at the time Washington was willing to pay 10 times what the Penguins would have and if we were in the same position as Jagr, we all would have been ready to cash in. You don't have to cheer him but do you really have to boo him every time he touches the puck?

I will say this though, the fans pay big money to get into the games so if they want to boo or chant things I think they have the right - just keep it clean.

The captain of the Senators will play. The Senators respond with arguably their best period of hockey in the series but they can't grab the lead as the teams head to intermission it is scoreless.

As inspiring as Alfredsson was to his team and the fans, I thought the crowd would have been much louder.

The shows go well. The crowd outside of the arena doesn't have nearly as much energy as it did a year ago. I know that has alot to do with the Penguins leading two games to none but it was still a surprise. It seems as if they want the series to end so they can move on from a disappointing finish to the season.

Heading back to the arena to send out our packages and stories for the early shows on WPXI, Channel 11. We are working with the CBC again this year. They have been just great to work with.

We may need new brakes. The brakes on the Ford Explorer we are driving sound terrible. We first noticed a noise when we came across the border. Richard and I thought it was no big deal but every time we got in the car that noise was louder.

So we went to the Kanata Ford dealership to see if they could look at the car. No go until Tuesday morning and early Tuesday morning when the doors open at 7 a.m.

You have to be safe on the road.

You can't miss it and its brand new for the playoffs - The Ottawa Senators have put up a big photograph of their series-clinching handshake from last year's postseason win over the Penguins on the wall just outside the Penguins lockerroom.

When I say big, I mean BIG -- perhaps 20 feet high by 20 feet wide. Big!

The Senators are doing anything they can to get into the Penguins minds - it doesn't seem to work. Marc-Andre Fleury says its a nice art and Ryan Malone says they could paint the walls pink and it wouldn't bother the team.

I walk into the Ottawa lockerroom and I step right on the Senators logo! I'm in trouble - in hockey lockerrooms that is a major sin!

The media relations person for the Senators tells me nicely to watch my step. Ottawa tough guy Chris Neil has some fun and starts screaming at me to get off of the logo. I don't know how I missed it but I did and walked all over it.

This isn't just an Ottawa thing, the Penguins have the same rule in their room. You don't walk on the logo or you can be fined. I haven't seen a fine yet but I have seen members of the media yelled at by the Penguins.

While in the lockerroom, Jason Spezza does confirm that his leg injury won't keep him from playing.

The Ottawa Senators are currently on the ice taking their morning skate before game three.

Good News for Ottawa fans the teams Captain Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza both take part in the skate leading everyone to believe that they will both play in game three. It could give the Senators a big emotional lift if these players - banged up players - can go in game three.

The Blogging Gods have not been with us on this trip to Ottawa for the Penguins/Senators playoff series. The Treo doesn't work for e-mails north of the border, but the phone on the Treo works.

After using the Holiday Inn computer to send in some Blogs very early Monday morning, I thought we were back in business, but that wasn't to be due to a network problem Monday afternoon that didn't allow me to send out the blog.

The Penguins are up two games to none but Ottawa fans still think they can get it done. Two Ottawa fans just drove up along side of us so they could wave a Senators flag at us. The Penguins better be ready for a wild crowd Monday night.

Sorry about the delay in my latest blog page - the reason why you ask - no we were not arrested at the border but apparently my Treo is having problems adjusting to a new country so blogs that were meant to go out Sunday afternoon just sat in the outbox. We are working on solving the problem. But let’s not let those blogs go waste. Let’s take a look at what was going on Sunday afternoon on our trip into the Great White North!

I don't know why but for the second straight year the government of Canada has seen fit to allow us across the border. The Canadian Border Patrol moved everyone through very quickly. Last year the CBP officer talked a little hockey with us - not this year - this year it was all business all the time. It may have something to do with the Penguins leading the series.

Seriously, the CBP people we have dealt with have been very professional and as far as I can tell do a very good job.

The Thousand Islands Region is even more beautiful on the Canadian side of the border.

Upset of the playoff season so far - Richard who never gives up the wheel, let me drive for three hours today. That never happens and frankly I'm worried the sun may fall out of the sky.

Driving through Buffalo, site of the Winter Classic! The Penguins beat the Sabres in a shootout - if you recall Colby Armstrong scored the first goal of that game.

Buffalo just missed this year's playoffs they could have used that extra point.

On the road again!

Photographer Richard Kenyon and I left WPXI for Ottawa this morning at 8 a.m. - We made the same trip last year and had a great time covering the Penguins while experiencing the sights and sounds of Canada's capital city.

We drove up last year in bright sunshine, this year its gray and rainy.

I'm excited to be going on this road trip but it is tough to leave home - my son was excited about being the man of the house last night until he went to bed and then the tears came because I was leaving. His little sister was fine with it and colored me a picture for the trip. It is one of the all time great works of art.

Following today's optional skate Penguins Head Coach Michel Therrien meet the media. Therrien says his team is playing well in all aspects of the game. He wasn't happy that his team gave up a three goal lead but he said it could give them some more confidence because they were able to comeback from that and still win.

I asked a few of the Penguins players about having two days off - normally the playoffs feature games every other night...... Jarkko Ruutu says he likes to play every other night but agreed with Jordan Staal that any extra rest you can get at this time of year is big. Coach Therrien said he thinks the two days off will give the Penguins a chance to get their emotions back in check after two big wins.

To a man everyone in the Penguins locker-room believes this team has the killer instinct to finish off the Senators as quickly as possible.

The Penguins will have a morning skate Sunday before flying to Ottawa at 2pm.

While his teammates play a game of four on four at the other end of the ice Roberts is skating alone at the other end - hold on - Ty Conklin has arrived and is in net taking shots from Roberts and Ryan Whitney.

The Penguins took the ice for their optional skate this morning up two games to none in their best of seven playoff series with the Ottawa Senators.

Ten players took part in the optional skate - the lone goalie was Danny Sabourin.

Crosby, Malkin, Malone, and Roberts to name a few took the skate off.

The Penguins have another skate set for Sunday here at the Mellon Arena before they leave for Ottawa and game three which is set for Monday.

Before we blog Penguins, I have to send out a big Happy Birthday to my brother David, who in my opinion is the greatest brother of all time! That's just my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

At lunch today everyone was talking Penguins and no one is giving Ottawa a chance to make any type of a comeback. Most everyone says it will be a five game series but I think they really want to call for the sweep!

The sweep could be the right call. Ottawa doesn't seem like they have any answers to the Penguins questions, or at this point the hunger to make it a tight series. Again, just another one of my opinions and I'm sticking with this one, too.

Thursday, 4/10 -- 12 PM
My mailman is changing things up; normally the mail comes in the afternoon but the past few days it has arrived in the morning and that was a good thing today because the Sports Illustrated arrived and in it was an article on playoff goaltending and how important it is!

Last night, Marc-Andre Fleury looked tremendous against against Ottawa pitching his first playoff shutout. Some will say he wasn't tested enough - I don't buy that. He was asked to make 26 saves and he did; and if they weren't the toughest shots, give some credit to the defense.

Back to Sports Illustrated - in the article on how important goaltending is, Pierre McGuire ranks the playoff goaltenders. Martin Brodeur was number one, as you would expect. Marc-Andre Fleury of the Penguins was ranked 12th. If he continues play like he did last night he will be moving up the charts quickly.

Fleury and his teammates are on the ice right now for a between-game skate.

I'm on my way to pick up my little girl from school so I will taking a break from the blog the rest of the day, but Rich Walsh will have you covered on his blog.

The Penguins began their playoff series with the Ottawa Senators with a resounding 4-0 win. Gary Roberts picks up two goals and Marc-Andre Fleury makes 26 saves.

The Penguins also sent a message to the Senators - they won't be pushed around. It was a complete win - exactly the type of win a club looks for when it opens a playoff series.

Max Talbot is ready to go following practice today. He said, for a hockey player, the playoffs are like Christmas -- you work all year long for this moment.

Sidney Crosby said his team is less nervous and more confident this year. For the second straight day Crosby and his teammates had to answer questions regarding the Senators comments that the Penguins tanked their fianl game against the Flyers.

The Penguins were on the ice for the game day workout at 10:30 a.m. Most of the players were off the ice by 11 a.m.

The Penguins seemed loose flashing a number smiles. Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal spent some extra time working on face-offs.

Crosby also had Sergei Gonchar shoot pucks behind him while he was in front of the net so he could reach behind his back and deflect the puck through his legs and into the net. Those amazing plays don't happpen by accident. The Pens look ready.

The Igloo ice has a couple of new images on it or in it I should say - at both ends of the ice the NHL has placed this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs 2008 logo.

If you have tickets down low to tonight's Penguins-Ottawa contest you should have a great view the glass is being cleaned. Doesn't sound like a big deal but I have been to the majority of the Penguins game day morning skates this year and this is the first time the glass is being cleaned.

It is a clear sign that the National Hockey League Playoffs have arrived.

Tuesday, 4/8 -- 1:30 PM
The Penguins have completed their first practice of the 2008 postseason. It was a crisp high energy workout.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque told me at today's workout that the biggest differences between a regular season workout and a postseason workout is the speed and intensity - he also said players are starting to sharpen that healthy edge that they play on.

Following todays practice the Penguins talked with the media - the number one question - did they tank against the Flyers - that's what Ottawa Head Coach Bryan Murray thinks - the Penguins to a man said its just not true and Pens Head Coach Michel Therrien wouldn't comment on it.

The one thing a few Penguins admitted to was perhaps not being mentally sharp enough for the game but a tank job - no. With those questions now behind them they are focused on the playoff opener against Ottawa tomorrow night in the Igloo.

The Penguins will have a morning skate Wednesday at 10:30 before their NHL Playoff opener with the Senators at 7:10 p.m.

Tuesday -- 11:30 AM
The Penguins dropped the puck on their first playoff workout at 10:30 this morning at the Southpointe Icoplex. All available Penguins are on the ice including Sidney Crosby, who was held out of Sunday's regular season finale against the Philadelphia Flyers. About 20 fans and the same number of media types are watching today's practice.
