The Road To The Stanley Cup: Rich's Blog

Sunday, 5/11 -- 9:33 PM

Just when you thought the Pens were gonna take a 3-1 lead... Malkin turns it over in the neutral zone... And Mike Richards gets a shorty to tie it at 2.

The Pens have definitely out played the Flyers in this game but martin biron has made a bunch of good saves. Its one of those games it looks like the Pens should win but...could easily lose because the Flyers are still in the game...

LETS GO PENS... WE NEED MORE COW BELL...WWGRD

Sunday, 5/11 -- 8:45 PM

The pens got jobbed by the refs. That was definitely a goal. It should be 2-0 pens...instead the Pens only lead 1-0 after 1.

It looked as if Sidney gave the pens a 2-0 lead... The one replay clearly shows the puck going over the line...but I guess the refs didn't see that one.

I have an idea about inconclusive goals...or touchdowns in football for that matter... They should find out whatever technology CSI has on their shows and get it. They would be able to determine the puck crossed the line...and what Bill Phillips was doing at that very moment.

Friday, 5/9 -- 11:29 PM
Just call me Nostradamus...I predicted the Pens would win game 5 against the Rangers in OT... (check below) I also predicted the Pens woud win game 1 against the Flyers 4-2. (check below) I'll have my prediction for game 2 coming up in a little.

What a game tonite...Malkin is incredible. Did you happen to see his goal that made it 4-2?

I can't wait for game 2. By the way, I think the Pens will take game 2 at Mellon Arena. They will win 3-0.

Friday, 5/9 -- 9:03 PM
Some fans just got lucky....Kiss Cam

Pens up 4-2

Malkin is incredible

Friday, 5/9 -- 8:19 PM
With 6 seconds left in the first. Evgeni Malkin gives the Pens a 3-2 advantage.

That's a tough goal to come back from.

Friday, 5/9 -- 8:13 PM
Wow what a first period so far...the fans are really into it. 2-2. Crosby had an unbelievable goal to tie the game.

It's cool that all fans are wearing white.

I had a chance to talk to RJ Umbergers parents before the game...did you know they are my cousins? I didn't tell them who I was really routing for.

Friday, 5/9 -- 5:39 PM
The Pens are in the building getting ready for game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Right now...Billy and I are sitting in the stands waiting to report in our Pens special that starts at 6:15. Mellon Arena is completely empty but that won't be the case in a couple of hours.

Just like I predicted game 5 of the Rangers series...(check below) the Pens will win tonight... I'm guessing the score will be 4-2 Pens.

Check back because Billy and I are having a blog off tonight...and I'm determined to win.

Friday, 5/9 -- 5:15 PM
John Fedko here, checking in on Rich's blog...
The light rain falling at 5:15 is not putting a damper on the Pens pre-game party before Game one with the Flyers. The Pens fans are tailgating in full force and the lawn in front of the outdoor big screen is packed already..more than two hours before gametime.

The few Flyers fans who are here wearing their Flyers jerseys are getting heckled unmercilessly. All in good fun of course.

Friday, 5/2 -- 2:06 PM
Well the Pens got one out of two in NYC. Not too bad. They look to wrap up the series on Sunday. A game you can watch on Channel 11.

We are on our way back to Pittsburgh. I decided to eat at the hotel before leaving because I know my choices are limited to Roy Rogers on the way home.

So my photographer, Richard and a photographer from another station, Jeff, have been hyping up the breakfast buffet at the Grand Hyatt. I was looking forward to it all week. I don't know what they were thinking. It was way overrated. Not to mention, it was $35 (don’t tell my boss). I would rather go to Eat ‘n Park for 7 bucks. The eggs were watery, the french toast was hard and dry, the bacon was burnt. Now I know what a $35 breakfast tastes like. Another valuable lesson learned... Just because it's more expensive doesn't mean its better.

Ran into my buddy Tim Robbins again last night. He told me the Rangers were going to win the series. That's when I said stick to acting because obviously you haven't been watching the previous 3 games.

Thursday, 5/1 -- 8:20 PM
Rangers strike first. Jagr scored. To make matters worse now, I have to sit here and listen to the Rangers fans sing that stupid song.

Thursday, 5/1 -- 7:50 PM
New York City has been interesting. I was approached by jewelry salesman. It was weird - he didn't have a store. He just had some items in a duffle bag - mostly watches. He tried to sell me a Rolex for $1000. Wow, what a great deal I thought, but after further review of the 'Rolex' I noticed it was ticking, and even I know Rolex watches don't tick. It was a fake. The nice man was trying to pull a fast one on me. Obviously, I did not make a purchase from that jeweler.

Oh yeah... The Pens game was pretty boring in the first period. They played most of it between the blue lines. Game scoreless after 1.

Thursday, 5/1 -- 1:50 PM
I highly recommend the place we ate dinner last night -- Angelos in Little Italy. It was unbelievable. The food and atmosphere was great. I felt like I was in an episode of the Sopranos, especially the walk to the restaurant. Let's just say there were these two guys sitting outside of an Italian deli and it didn't sound like they were talking about the sandwiches.

Thursday, 5/1 -- 12:45 PM
Just found out Max Talbot won't play tonight.

Back to my cab ride story -- the cab drivers are out of control. It's amazing there isn't more accidents here. I guess no laws when it come to taxis. I don't think our last driver did anything legal. We went down the wrong way because it was a short cut, cut off a van and almost hit three guys on bicycles. Oh yeah, not to mention all the people he almost ran over. But gladly everything worked out and we got to our destination safe and didn't hurt anyone getting there.

Unfortunely, we are waiting for a cab right now.

Thursday, 5/1 -- 11:45 AM
The Pens just finished their pregame skate. They looked loose and want to get this series wrapped up tonight.

Scary Gary Roberts will be back in the line up. Speaking of scary, the cabs rides are crazy. I'll get back to that in a minute. I'm about to interview Sid.

Wednesday, 4/30 -- 2:40 PM
Even though it was an optional skate this morning it was eventful day at practice.

Rangers forward Sean Avery was taking to the hospital last night after suffering a lacerated spleen. Even though the Pens aren't a big fan of Avery on the ice, they never want to see a fellow player’s health in jeopardy.

Funny story -- while I was doing stand-ups at St. Vincent Hospital, actor Tim Robbins stopped to talk about the Rangers and Pens game. He must live in the area. He is also a huge Rangers fan. I told him he has one more game left. I was a big fan of his movie 'The Shawshank Redemption.'

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 9:14 PM
Ryan Malone just gave the Pens a 5-3 lead -- deflection in front from Kris Letang.

Two minutes later during a break in game action, fans took it upon themselves to entertain everyone. A big fight just broke out in front of me in the stands.

They also played an Elvis song. Coincidence. I think not. Elvis is about to leave the building.

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 8:53 PM
Malkin is the best player in Hockey right now. He just gave the Pens a 4-3 lead. A slapshot with 3 seconds left on the powerplay. The New York fans are not a happy bunch. One period left.

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 8:35 PM
This game is far from over. The Rangers just tied it at 3 with help from Jagr. I have to admit, it was a pretty nice goal.

I don't want the Rangers to score anymore because the fans sing this stupid song after each goal.

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 8:15 PM
What a first period by the Pens! After the Rangers tied the game at 1, Laraque and Malkin both scored. Malkin's goal was sick. A one timer from just inside the blue line! 3-1 after 1.

I'm going to attempt to get through crowd and get something to drink.

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 7 PM
Wow, the guy who sang our National Anthem was incredible. I never heard a crowd cheer so loud for an anthem singer. It was cool. I even got goose bumps.

The Pens are off to a pretty good start. Hossa rebound -- 1-0 Pens. That really silenced the crowd.

Tuesday, 4/29 -- 2 PM
The Pens practiced this morning at Madison Square Garden. It was a very loose practice. The Pens had 'Bad' by Michael Jackson blaring in the lockeroom.

The big talk in the lockeroom after practice was NY goalie Henrik Lundquist said the Rangers were going to win. The Pens obviously think otherwise... Marc-Andre Fleury said the Pens are going to win tonight.

Evgeni Malkin was named a Hart Trophy finalist.

Now we are going to lunch at the Comfort Diner. I don't think I've been to a real diner.

Monday, 4/28 -- 7:40 PM
Well, bad news. The Pirates game was postponed. So looks like we won't get to go to Shea Stadium. I'm sure I will be able to find something else to do in NYC.

We are in Times Square looking for a place to eat. The good thing about here is no Roy Rogers.

Talk to you tomorrow morning from the Pens morning practice at Madison Square Garden.

Monday, 4/28 -- 4:05 PM
Almost in NYC. Currently driving underneath the Hudson River. Just moments away from the Big Apple.

It's raining here. Doesn't look good for the Buccos game.

In Manhattan now. Stay tuned..more blogs to come.

Monday, 4/28 -- 3:30 PM
How fitting -- we are in New Jersey and guess what's on the radio? Bon Jovi.

A guy in an Pontiac Trans Am just pulled up next to us jammin to "Livin' on a Prayer." I just felt liked we traveled back in time to 1990.

Monday, 4/28 -- 3:15 PM
We're in New Jersey now. I think I just saw Tony Soprano. By the way -- New Jersey drivers are the worst.

Hopefully it stops raining. We have tickets to the Pirates-Mets game. I don't want it to be postponed.

Monday, 4/28 -- 2 PM
No Chick Fil-A within 28 miles. So we settled for Arbys. Anything is better than Roy Rogers.

It's still raining. We're jammin to Kanye West right now.

I'm playing DJ because Richard is reluctant to let me drive. I really don't mind. I actually don't want to drive, but I offered to be nice. I kinda like just chillin on the passenger side. Plus I wouldn't be able to blog if I was driving.

We are passing through Harrisburg now. There are a lot of cows here -- yes, I am talking about the animal. Everytime I look out the window I see a cow.

We just passed a golf course. Nobody was playing. Too wet I guess.

Speaking of golf courses. I played Oakmont Country Club on Friday. Don't be jealous. What a golf course. It's in awesome shape. I played with my brother Greg, Blasé and Kevin. We played the back tees, which wasn't my decision by the way. Kevin shot 87. I shot 88. Blasé had an 89 and my brother Greg shot 90. It was a great match... more importantly we had a great time. The Pens also won that night. It was a good day.

Monday, 4/28 -- 12:52 PM
Awesome. We just exited the turnpike. Looking for a Chick Fil-A.

Monday, 4/28 -- 12:45 PM
Are you kidding me -- another reststop another Roy Rogers? We are holding out hope for something other than Roy Rogers. I am starving. I might have to just suck it up if the next rest area doesn't have something other than Roy Rogers.

It's still raining. We just passed a motorcyclist. I feel bad for that dude. He must be soked.

Monday, 4/28 -- 12 PM
The road trip begins. On my way to NYC. I'm excited. I haven't been to the Big Apple in quite sometime. Only thing not exciting right now is driving on the wonderful Pa. turnpike in the rain. But it might be the best way to travel on the turnpike because you hydroplane over all the pot holes. We are about 2 hours into our trip. One more on the turnpike and about 4 more hours til we get to the city.

I'm hungry. Richard (WPXI Photographer) and I are looking for a place to eat. We might hold off because there's not too much to choose from on the turnpike. I have an idea for the people in charge of the turnpike -- how about something different than a Roy Rogers? I didn't even know that fast food chain still existed. Have you ever seen one NOT on the turnpike? If it was up to me, I would put Chick Fil-A in the rest stops. The best sweet tea anywhere.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 11 PM
The Pens win. What a game! What an atmosphere at Mellon Arena!

I was in the lockeroom after the game. The players were jamming to rap music after the game. Maybe you could hear it on the news while we were interviewing the guys.

The Pens are pumped. They won and take a 2-0 series lead to the 'Big Apple' but they also know the series is far from over.

Alby and Billy are also pumped. We all watched the game from the auxiliary press box. Free drinks and popcorn -- it was great. We are just wrapping up our busy day. The Pens win, the Pirates win and the Steelers drafted another quarterback.

I have to get up early to leave for New York for games 3 and 4. Hopefully I can bring the Pens some good luck. They will need it New York. They haven't won at MSG all year.

Stay tuned for more blogs from the Big Apple.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 3:45 PM
The Steelers should draft Jordan Staal. He's big and knows how to score. No. 11 just gave the Pens a 1-0 lead.

The crowd went crazy. White towels everywhere.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 3:30 PM
Second period under way. I almost dropped my Coke after seeing Fleury make an incredible save on Jagr. That will definitely make the highlights tonight.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 2:45 PM
Big fight. Maybe its over the Steelers 5th-round draft choice Oregon quarterback, Dennis Dixon. I thought that Kevin Colbert said they weren't drafting a quarterback.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 2:40 PM
Everyone was just jammimg to Michael Jackson. Awesome video on score board. The Penguins mascot chased a Rangers fan back to NYC. Maybe it will be on YouTube.

Aw ... Ruutu just got a penalty.

Sunday, 4/27 -- 2:30 PM
Game two under way. The crowd is pumped. Bill and I have great seats for this one. Wow, Hossa just stopped on a breakaway. They just played the cow bell video on the scoreboard. I love it!

4/11
With less than two minutes left, the Penguins score two goals and win the game! Go Pens!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Senators just tied the game. 10 minutes left. I just feel overtime.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boy, was I wrong! The Senators just scored again. 3-2.I should have never said that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sykora is looking for his first career hat trick. That would be sweet. I'm looking for food. I'm hungry.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Pens scored again. Petr Sykora gets his second of the game. 3-0 pens. I was wrong about Ottawa not scoring this series. Shean Donovan just scored the Senators first goal of the playoffs. What a great game, great atmosphere and of course great music in between action. It's way better than watching a meaningless Yankees-Red Sox game (just kidding).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yea, Petr Sykora scored on the power play to give the Pens the 2-0 lead. I don't think Ottawa is going to score all series.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2nd period -- Pens just got another goal, and there's still some great music playing in between the action. Just heard an oldie but goodie. I don't know what its called, but I liked it. I think it's that Shout song.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have to find out who puts the music playlist together for Pens games. Great variety! It's better than a club. I've heard Styx and House of Pain in a matter of a couple of minutes. Oh by the way, the Pens are up 1-nothing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pens and Senators are scoreless in the 1st period, but the Penguins have had a ton of scoring chances so far. Another highlight of the 1st, the Steelers just wished the Pens good luck on the scoreboard. The crowd is pumped.

Monday -- 9:28 PM
Rowdy crowd at The Fox and The Hound. That's where I'm watching the game.

Hossa finally gets a goal. The crowd went crazy here. It's like being at the arena.

4-1 Pens. I can feel a sweep. Just like the Buccos over the Reds this weekend.

People are chanting Ger-Ber here.

Saturday -- 1:42 AM
Wow what a game. The Pens went up 3-0. Ottawa came back to tie at 3 but the hometown kid, Ryan Malone finished as the hometown hero. Malone scored the winning goal with about one minute to go. The Pens take a 2-0 lead in the series before heading to Ottawa on monday.

Game two was one of the most exciting games I have ever attended. Hopefully, Bill will get to see a game like this one in Ottawa. The crowd was tremendous. I had a chance to sit in Section C for the game and I just could feel the Pens were going to win when they got that late power play.

Well I got to get home after a long, but exciting day of work. I'm tired.

Friday -- 9:40 PM
Boy was I wrong. The Sens just tied the game. 10 minutes left. I just feel overtime.

Friday -- 8:42 PM
Boy was I wrong, the Sens just scored again. 3-2. I should have never said that.

Friday -- 8:35 PM
Sykora is looking for his first career hat trick. That would be sweet. I'm looking for more food. I'm hungry.

Friday -- 8:32 PM
The Pens scored again. Petr Sykora gets his 2nd of the game. 3-0 Pens. But I was wrong about Ottawa not scoring this series. Shean Donovan just scored the Sens 1st goal of the playoffs. What a great game, great atmosphere and of course great music in between action. Its way better than watching a meaningless Yankees-Red Sox game.

Friday -- 8:22 PM
Oh yeah, Petr Sykora scored on the power play to give the Pens a 2-0 lead. I don't think Ottawa is going to score all series.

Friday -- 8:20 PM
2nd period -- Pens get another goal and still great music playing in between action. Just heard an oldie but goodie. I don't know what its called but I liked it. I think its that Shout song.

Friday -- 7:49 PM
I have to find out who puts the music playlist together for Pens games. Great variety. It's better than a club. I heard Styx and House of Pain in a matter of a couple of minutes. Oh, by the way, the Pens are up 1-nothing after 1. Gonchar one-timed one to gives the Pens the 1-0 advantage.

Friday -- 7:24 PM
Pens and sens are scoreless in the 1st but the Penguins have had a ton of scoring chances so far. Another hilight of the 1st, the Steelers just wished the Pens good luck on the scoreboard. The crowd is pumped.

Thursday -- 5:20 PM
The Pens back to practice today after last night's big win against Ottawa but they know it's far from over. They need 15 more games like last night to achieve their goal of a Stanley Cup championship.

Head Coach Michel Therrien gave last night's star, Gary Roberts the day off today. A little reward and rest for what the vet did to help out the cause in game one.

Last year game two was the Pens best game because it was the only one they won against the Sens. The Pens are hoping for the same game two result this year before the series shifts to Ottawa for game three on Monday.

Thursday -- 12:15 AM
The Pens go up 1-0 in the series with a 4-0 win against Ottawa because of goaltending, penalty killing and veteran Gary Roberts. Roberts got it started and finished it. Two goals by the vet.

One down and 15 more wins to a cup championship.

I was in the lockeroom to interview some of the guys after the game and they are pretty confident after this one. I 'll have more from practice tomorrow.

Wednesday -- 8:52 PM
The 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs are underway.

The Pens looked like champions in the first period againts the sens. Gary Roberts got it started about a minute in the game to make it 1-0. Then about 11 minutes later Petr Sykor one-timed a great pass from Malkin to make it 2-0.

Us media get to enjoy the game from section C 30. Stop by and say hi if you have time. It is loud. The fans are really into it.

I gotta give the Pens props for not only their play on the ice so far tonight but also the music selection in between periods.

Well gotta get back to game. One more period left and the Pens will take a 1-0 lead in the series.
