A University of Pittsburgh basketball player is facing charges after a run-in with police.

Starting point guard Levance Fields was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly trying to take a gun from an off-duty police officer.

According to police, just before 2 a.m., the officer asked Fields to stop yelling and using offensive language inside a night club. Fields allegedly left the club and started arguing with someone in the street when the officer approached him again.

The officer said Fields punched him in the chest and tried to grab his gun. The officer reportedly pushed him away, and another security guard used a Taser gun on Fields. Fields was taken to the hospital, and then to jail.

Fields, a junior at Pitt, has been a starter since his freshman season.

Head coach Jamie Dixon issued this statement:
“We will let the judicial process run its course before determining what disciplinary action is necessary. We have built a successful program at Pitt, on and off the court, by prioritizing personal accountability and responsibility. We will not compromise when it comes to those values.”
