One-On-One With Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin

Tomlin Says He's Football Junkie

The face of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is hard to read on the sidelines. But Channel 11 captured a different side of Tomlin in a one-on-one interview with reporter David Johnson.

"I love it. It's a football town. I'm a football junkie. It happens to be my hobby as well as my job," said Tomlin.

When Tomlin became the Steelers new head coach, he moved his family to Squirrel Hill.

"It's an awesome community we live in. Everything's close. We love the diversity that living in the city provides," he said.

In addition to choosing to live in the city of Pittsburgh, Tomlin and his wife chose to send their kids to city public schools.

"I'm a product of public schools, and I think I turned out OK thus far. I think there's something to be said for living in the community and going to the school around the corner," said Tomlin.

But yet because of who Tomlin is, 5-year-old Dino and 6-year-old Mason Tomlin are not your everyday school kids.

Reporter David Johnson asked, “Do they get bugged much? Do the other kids know who they are?”

"They're probably a little more popular than a kindergartner and 1st grader should be. It's amazing how many 4th- and 5th-graders know their names when I go to pick then up on Fridays," said Tomlin.

On Saturdays, Tomlin is a soccer dad. His two children play in the Dynamo League. It's a league that promotes teamwork over individual achievement. In fact, parents are prohibited from cheering on their kids by name.

"My wife has to remind me of that every week,” said Tomlin. “I can't help it. It's the coach in me. I think they understand I have a tough time staying inside that box."

Tomlin said his hobbies and free time revolve around his kids. But what else does he do to relax?

"I don't. I don't relax. I laugh. I'm kind of a high-strung guy. Competing is relaxing,” said Tomlin.

Ok, but he must at least watch some TV, right?

"I watch reality television. Not like the reality TV like some of these shows that are on. But documentaries,” said Tomlin. "I'm into Genghis Khan right now. Genghis was a bad man. He took over Asia in 20 years on horseback."

Tomlin called the Mongols the “ultimate road team." But don't ask him about dramas or comedies or the new season. He does know what he likes when it comes to movies.

"My wife hates it, but I like movies I like, and I'll watch them 100 times: 'All the Right Moves,' 'Glory,' the 'Karate Kid' sequels," said Tomlin.
