The City of Pittsburgh invited the public to come downtown on Friday to pay tribute to late sportscaster Myron Cope.

A brief ceremony was held starting around noon at the City-County Building.

There were a few speakers, a Terrible Towel flag was raised, and then people everywhere were asked to wave their Terrible Towels in Cope's memory.

Cope died on Wednesday in Mount Lebanon. Funeral services were held for Cope Friday at the William Slater Funeral Home.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will honor Cope at Sunday's game versus the Atlanta Thrashers. Fans in attendance are being asked to bring their Terrible Towels and join the Penguins in honoring Cope as one of Pittsburgh's most celebrated broadcasting legends.

Another touching tribute was held Wednesday night.

Fans, young and old, waved Terrible Towels in the Pitt graduate's memory before Wednesday night's men's basketball game at the Peterson Events Center.

Cope's old broadcast colleague and Pitt announcer Bill Hillgrove paid tribute to the inventor of the Terrible Towel and one of the most famous voices in Pittsburgh history.

And one Pittsburgh Steelers fan set up a personal memorial to Cope just outside the front doors of Cope's former place of business, Heinz Field.

Joe Bagnato just returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh after 10 years in Florida. He heard the news of Myron Cope's passing while at his digital art class.

Bagnato went to Heinz Field and laid down his Terrible Towel, loyal Steelers shirt and flowers as a memorial to Cope.

"When you grew up in this area, like I did, I was born in '73, and your mother and your father raise you in the Pittsburgh Steelers and you listen to Myron Cope all your life, I thought it would be a good gesture to come out here. I never met the man, but if I did, I'd say, 'You're a great broadcaster,’” Bagnato said.

Bagnato said he hopes that more fans will come down and add to his Cope memorial in tribute to the Steelers' longtime broadcaster.
