The Pittsburgh Penguins hit the ice Thursday night with a chance to advance to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since the 1991-92 season.

Philadelphia defenseman Braydon Coburn was ruled out for a second straight game after his swollen left eye didn't show enough improvement.

For the Penguins, Gary Roberts sat out again with pneumonia.

The Flyers came out with determination. After Marc-Andre Fleury stopped a few tough shots, Joffrey Lupul got one by him with 11:33 left in the first period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Danny Briere crashed the net to put another goal past Fleury. The Flyers led 2-0.

The Flyers got another power play late in the period and made the Penguins pay, with Jeff Carter putting the Flyers up 3-0 at the end of one.

No goals were scored in the second period.

The Penguins scored a little more than three minutes into the third period. Jordan Staal, who had just returned from his grandfather's funeral, pushed the puck past Marty Biron to make it 3-1 Flyers.

Then with less than six minutes left, Jordan Staal scored again, hitting a one-timer past Biron to cut the Flyers lead to 3-2.

The Penguins pulled their goalie late, and the Flyers got an empty net goal to seal a 4-2 win.

The series moves back to Mellon Arena on Sunday at 3:08 p.m.
