Bill Phillips' Blog: Santonio Holmes Returns

Posted: 9:31 am EDT October 30, 2008Updated: 9:38 am EDT October 30, 2008

The Steelers receiver who was cited for marijuana possession last Thursday was back on the practice field Wednesday with his teammates after missing Sunday's game with the Giants.

Holmes told me it was a long weekend but one that he will learn from. He said his meeting with head coach Mike Tomlin went well but wouldn't go into specifics or comment on Coach Tomlin's decision to make him inactive for the game against the Giants.

Holmes told reporters that backup quarterback Charlie Batch asked him to address the team Monday to clear the air. He went on to say the meeting went well but would not go into detail about what he said.

The Steelers new long snapper, Jared Retkofsky, looked good in practice today. He told me he had been loading trucks in Fort Worth, Texas, before getting the call from the Steelers. He said he had been working out but was focused on finding a job.

Retkofsky said he has his degree from TCU but the job market is bad in Fort Worth. It was a bad deal for Greg Warren but his friend catches a break because of his injury.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was happy to see Holmes back at practice. The Steelers Quarterback knows he will need him against the Redskins.

What Ben is hoping to avoid this coming Monday night is the distraction of the Washington Cheerleaders. The First Ladies of Football as they are known in DC have their dressing room next door to the Steelers, and they stretch and warmup in the runway where the Steelers take the field.

I guess that's the Redskins looking for any edge they can find!
