Pens Host Sabres Aiming For Sixth Straight Win

(Sports Network) - The scorching Pittsburgh Penguins will aim for a sixth straight victory tonight, when they welcome the Buffalo Sabres for a matchup at Mellon Arena.

The Penguins have used comebacks in their last two victories, but also blew a 3-0 lead in their latest win, a 5-4 shootout victory over visiting Philadelphia.

Rookie defenseman Alex Goligoski scored the lone shootout goal, as the Penguins continued their home dominance of the Flyers.

After Dany Sabourin stoned Joffrey Lupul to end the fifth round, Goligoski faked the backhand before switching to the forehand and tucking the disc behind Martin Biron. Scott Hartnell looked to even the shootout, but lost the handle and the game ended in Pittsburgh's favor.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals, while Evgeni Malkin added a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who have defeated Philly in five straight and 10 of 11 meetings at the Igloo.

Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 24 shots before he was replaced by Sabourin at the beginning of the third period. Sabourin stopped all 11 shots he faced.

Pittsburgh previous victory was a 7-6 overtime victory in Detroit. The Pens won that contest despite trailing 5-2 early in the third period.

Tonight's test marks the middle portion of a three-game homestand for the Penguins, who are 5-2-1 as the host this year. Pittsburgh will wrap the residency Tuesday against Minnesota.

The Sabres, meanwhile, have dropped three of their last four contests and were slammed by visiting Columbus on Friday night. R.J. Umberger scored two goals as the Blue Jackets crushed Buffalo, 6-1, at HSBC Arena.

Jason Pominville scored the lone goal while Patrick Lalime gave up all six goals on 23 shots for the Sabres. Ryan Miller briefly replaced Lalime in the second period and stopped two shots.

The Sabres are 4-1-2 as the visiting team this year and are playing the first of two straight on the road tonight. Buffalo will also visit Boston on Wednesday.

The Penguins have won four straight and six of the last seven meetings with Buffalo and the Sabres have dropped two in a row and three of four in the Steel City.
