Pittsburgh, PA -- (Sports Network) - Kris Versteeg's goal with 2:22 remaining in overtime sent Chicago over Pittsburgh, 2-1, at Mellon Arena.

Versteeg was stationed in front of the Penguins' crease, and managed to redirect Brian Campbell's centering pass home before being buried.

Marian Hossa also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won two of three. Antti Niemi got the win with 32 saves and came within a minute and a half of posting his third career shutout.

"He deserved the win tonight," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville about Niemi. "It's nice to know that the tandem we got is strong and today's game was a goalie win."

Jordan Staal broke up the shutout bid for the Penguins, who had won six of seven coming in. Marc-Andre Fleury was the hard-luck loser after stopping 29 shots.

"It was a big game for both teams to prove themselves," said Staal. "We know this is a good team and we wanted to show them our best, which wasn't enough tonight."

Former Penguin Hossa opened the scoring for Chicago at the 7:37 mark of the first period, then Niemi stood tall to keep that edge alive.

He stopped nine shots in the opening 20 minutes, then came up with 17 saves in the second period. Pittsburgh threw 10 shots on net in the first 18 1/2 minutes of the third, but the last one extended the contest beyond regulation.

Niemi easily gloved Bill Guerin's sharp wrister with 1:39 to play, and Fleury went to the bench for an extra skater.

Mark Letestu won the faceoff in the right circle, then Sergei Gonchar pushed the puck back to the point for a shot by Evgeni Malkin. Niemi blocked that try, but the rebound came out to Staal who made no mistake for the tying score at 18:28.

Niemi improved to 5-1-1 this season in his first start since November 22...Campbell picked up two assists...Penguins captain Sidney Crosby missed the game with a recurring groin injury, and the club recalled Letestu from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
