Setzer Gets First IRP Win

Posted: 11:16 pm EDT August 5, 2005

Short track specialist Dennis Setzer led 177 of 200 laps en route to a dominating win in Friday night's Power Stroke Diesel 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at the 0.686-mile Indianapolis Raceway Park.

The win was the No.46 Chevrolet driver's fourth in the last six races and 16th of his truck career, but his first career top-five at IRP.

The series points leader started on the pole courtesy of an afternoon rain storm which cancelled qualifying and the race was over almost before it began.

Ted Musgrave started on the front row and gave Setzer a challenge for the first couple of laps, but he was no match for Setzer on this night.

Setzer pulled away and it wasn't long before he started lapping cars.

Behind the black Chevrolet, two cars were moving through the field, rookie Todd Kluever and Brendan Gaughan.

By lap 65 Kluever had charged from 16th on the starting grid to sixth, while Gaughan started 19th and made his first appearance in the top-10.

But no one had anything for Setzer who owned a 10-second lead after 90 laps. Just past the halfway point, Setzer passed Bobby Hamilton, putting the defending series champion down a lap.

Setzer only gave up the lead pit stops. On lap 135 Gaughan assumed the lead, but tried to stretch his fuel too far and ran out of gas in turn four of lap 140. That gave the lead to Chad Chaffin who was on a different pit stop strategy. But Chaffin finally had to make his way down pit lane on lap 147 and Setzer retook the top spot.

Setzer made a final stop on lap 181 when Deborah Renshaw spun handing the lead over to Jimmy Spencer. The No.46 Chevrolet restarted in second place and fought side-by-side with Spencer for three laps before finally getting underneath him for the lead.

Kluever followed Setzer underneath Spencer for second place and made a move on Setzer. He got underneath the points leader, but couldn't complete the pass. Setzer stayed up high on the track and his momentum through the turns was enough to hold off the youngster.

Kluever, Ron Hornaday Jr., Matt Crafton and Spencer completed the top-five.

Just six cars finished on the lead lap.

Setzer's win gives the Morgan-Dollar Chevrolet driver a 227-point lead over Musgrave in the championship. Hamilton is just two points behind Musgrave.

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, August 13th at the Nashville Superspeedway.
