Football Hall Of Fame Honors Broadcast Legend

Steelers' First Preseason Game Is Aug. 15

Friday, August 5, 2005 – updated: 6:17 pm EDT August 5, 2005

Myron Cope will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, this weekend.

Cope will receive the "Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award," which recognizes longtime exceptional achievement.

At age 76, Cope said he is feeling pretty good. "I could be better," he said, "but I take what I can get."

Cope's voice, the voice of the Steelers, is even more gravelly than it once was, one of the reasons Cope retired from the broadcast booth in June.

The voice of the broadcast legend and his sayings turned Cope from a little known sports writer to an accomplished football broadcast legend.

Cope said he had no intention of becoming a broadcaster and no training. It happened by accident. "It's is absolutely dumbfounding to me when I stop and think about it, " Cope said.

Cope said that part of him is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He said many, many years ago the Hall of Fame asked him for a Terrible Towel.

Cope said now that he is retired he isn't sure where he will watch the first game of the season, but has a few ideas.

The Steelers take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the first preseason game Aug. 15 at Heinz Field.
