Team Picks Up 6 New Drafts

Over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked up six new draft picks.

Monday, the Steelers introduced their No. 1 draft pick, wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

If you aren't familiar with that name, you'll get to know him a little better on Monday because Holmes is in town and he talked with Channel 11.

Holmes is from Ohio State. He is the school's fifth all-time leading receiver.

The Steelers originally had the 32nd pick in the 1st round. But they made a trade to get Holmes with the 25th selection.

Channel 11 sports reporter Rich Walsh talked caught up with Holmes and asked him what it means to him that the Steelers would trade up for him.

Walsh asked, "Were you surprised the Steelers made the effort to trade up to get you?"
Holmes said, "I was surprised that I was the only receiver taken in the first round and that it lasted that long, but at the same time I was a little nervous, you know, because I didn't think a receiver was going to get picked in the first round being, you know, that it took till the 25th pick. But when I got the phone call, you know, saying that we were going to trade up for you, you know, I couldn't be nothing but smiles. And I told my mom that I'm going to play for the Steelers and she looked at me like very surprised and at the same time my step dad came running in because he's been a big Steelers fan and he was probably the most proud guy I've ever seen."

In the third round, the Steelers drafted safety Anthony Smith of Syracuse.

Smith went to high school in Hubbard, Ohio, which is just 90 minutes from Pittsburgh.

Channel 11 sports reporter Rich Walsh went to Hubbard and discovered a secret Smith would like to keep from his new head coach.

Smith said, "I'm a Steelers fan now. I grew up a Cowboys fan though."
Walsh asked, "So in '95 you were rooting for the other team?"
Smith said, "I was rooting for the other team."
Walsh asked, "Does Cowher know that?"
"No. I won't tell him either,” Smith laughed.
