PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was discharged from Mercy Hospital at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to hospital officials. The hospital respected the wishes and privacy of Roethlisberger and his family, who asked the hospital not to confirm his discharge until Thursday morning.Doctors updated the condition of the Steelers quarterback on Wednesday afternoon.Doctors said that Ben was in fair condition and was up and out of bed.A second CT scan showed no sign of brain injury.Dr. Daniel Pituch said Ben did not have his jaw wired shut. Instead, titanium plates and screws were inserted onto the surface of broken bones in his jaw.Because of the new technology used, Ben was eating a soft diet and will not have to be on a liquid diet.Pituch said the technique used does not usually require additional major reconstructive procedures.ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
For the first time since Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's motorcycle slammed into a car, Pittsburgh police are speaking out.Pittsburgh Police Chief Dom Costa said, "At this time, it's ongoing. I know there's been a lot of reports in the media about this and that happening, but nothing officially has come across my desk. Until that point, until it's released by my office, nothing's official."Costa spoke publicly for the first time Wednesday about the investigation into Roethlisberger's accident.Costa said his officers are continuing to gather evidence, attempting to piece together exactly what happened at the intersection of Second Avenue and the 10th Street Bridge on Monday morning.According to witnesses, Roethlisberger was heading east on Second Avenue and had a green light when 62-year-old Martha Fleishman driving a Chrysler New Yorker made a left hand turn right in front of him.Witnesses said Fleishman did not have a green arrow but did have a green light.A sign on the signal indicates drivers are supposed to yield to oncoming traffic before making the left.Target 11 first reported Tuesday that Roethlisberger did not have a valid motorcycle learner's permit or a motorcycle license.According to a source, Roethlisberger's learner's permit had expired.Costa told Channel 11 he's still waiting for motor vehicle records on both Roethlisberger and Fleishman.Costa said, "We run licenses and we send away for a certified copy. Not until that time do we verify or confirm that a person is licensed in any shape or manor because the computers sometimes make mistakes and often do. So we make sure we have the certified information before we release the information. If someone there did not have a driver's license, then we will take the appropriate measures whether it may be a citation. But there are certain times when a license is permitted to be used 30 days after it's expired. But, again, nothing's been confirmed and we won't take any action until it is."Costa said he will met with officers before deciding if any charges will be filed in this case.
