Steelers Sign Najeh Davenport

Posted: 4:27 pm EDT September 8, 2006

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed running back Najeh Davenport to a one-year contract.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Davenport spent his first four NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, but was among the team's final cuts last weekend.

The 27-year-old former University of Miami-Florida star has been injury-prone in his NFL career. He missed the final eight games of the 2002 campaign with an eye injury and was shelved for the last 11 contests of 2005 with a broken ankle.

In 39 games, spent primarily as a backup to Ahman Green, Davenport has rushed for 1,068 yards and seven touchdowns on 217 carries. He has also caught 17 passes for 107 yards.

Davenport will give the Steelers a solid backup to Willie Parker, who rushed for 115 yards in Thursday's 28-17, season-opening victory over Miami

To open a spot on the roster, Pittsburgh released running back Patrick Cobbs, a rookie who was claimed off waivers from the New England Patriots on September 1.
