Steelers name QB coach Fichtner offensive coordinator

The Steelers stayed in-house when hiring their next offensive coordinator.

Quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner will direct the offense starting Thursday, the team announced.

“We have the nucleus to be successful, and I am thrilled about the chance to lead the offense as we have already started preparing for the 2018 season,” he said in a statement.

Fichtner joined the Steelers in 2007 as the wide receivers coach and became quarterbacks coach in 2010.

Over the past eight seasons, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ranks in the top 10 leaguewide in passing yards, touchdowns and rating, and has been selected to the Pro Bowl five times.

Before joining the Steelers, Fichtner served on college coaching staffs at Memphis, Arkansas State and Purdue, where he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1985.
