Steelers' Super Bowl ticket policy change upsets some season ticket holders

PITTSBURGH — Win Sunday, and they’re in! The Pittsburgh Steelers are one game away from a trip to Super Bowl LI.

However, if the team wins, some season ticket holders who would want to go to the game in Houston would face a problem.

Under a new policy, season ticket holders who win a lottery for the chance to buy tickets would have to pick them up in person in Houston the day before the Super Bowl.

“I guess I understand why they are doing it. I just don’t' like it,” Steelers season ticket holder Carmine Bellini said. “You know, if you are not 100 percent sure that you are even going to get to Houston, you don't have the option to sell them to a loved one or a friend who whoever you want to sell them to.”

During the Steelers last Super Bowl appearance in Dallas, season ticket holders who won tickets received them in the mail, but won’t be this time around.

The Steelers are offering several hundred Super Bowl tickets to season ticket holders. The Steelers’ ticket office said in a letter to those fans that winners must have the account holder pick up the tickets in Houston with a photo ID and name changes will not be accepted.

When reached for further comment, the Steelers released the following statement to Channel 11 News:

“Our policy regarding tickets is to discourage the tickets ending up in the hands of brokers so that our loyal season ticket holders can have an opportunity to enjoy the amazing experience of being at a Super Bowl in which the Steelers are participating."

Season ticket holders who are optimistic that the Steelers will appear in Super Bowl LI have until Friday morning to register with a credit card for the lottery, which takes place Saturday.

If the team defeats the New England Patriots on Sunday, each winner will receive two tickets at a cost of $900 to $1,100 each.
