Fleury or Murray? Do Penguins have playoff goalie conundrum?

CRANBERRY, Pa. — Four straight losses and panic is starting to set in among Pittsburgh Penguins fans despite having already clinched a playoff berth and being in the toughest division in the NHL. The team is also without some of the best players on the roster due to injury.

That being said, coach Mike Sullivan isn’t one for excuses, and the bottom line is that his team has dropped four in a row and, all of a sudden, looks lost at times on the ice.

Aside from worry stemming from injuries, which are improving by the way, determining the number one goalie heading into the playoffs is cause for concern. Or is it?

The score may have read 5-1 Blackhawks last night, but Marc-Andre Fleury kept it from being even worse. Yes, it could’ve easily been 7 or 8 to 1.

TRENDING NOW:

Matt Murray was brilliant last year in route to winning the Penguins fourth Stanley Cup. However, he hasn’t been as sharp in his last five games (2-3, .904 save percentage and 15 goals against).

Fleury has regained his form in the last five games, posting slightly better numbers (2-3, .929 save percentage and 13 goals against).

Sullivan said the Penguins have two number one goalies, and stepping back from the situation and looking at it realistically, every team in the NHL would kill to have two quality goaltenders. But does Sullivan owe it to Murray and Fleury to publicly name one as the starter for the remainder of the season?

Here are my conversations with both Murray and Fleury after their practice at UPMC Lemieux in Cranberry.
