Pirates' Jung Ho Kang may lose license in South Korea

PITTSBURGH — South Korean media is reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman Jung Ho Kang’s DUI arrest last week was his third in the past few years.

Police told reporters in South Korea that Kang was arrested in 2009 and 2011.

South Korea has a “three strikes law,” meaning Kang’s license will be automatically suspended for the next two years.

Police said Kang was over the legal limit when he slammed into a pole early Friday morning in Seoul.

According to a report from

, Jung Ho Kang was charged Friday (Korea Standard Time) in Seoul, following a DUI accident that he allegedly fled.

Cars in South Korea are equipped with dashcams. The video, which was aired on Korean media, shows the car going around a bend, then slamming into a guardrail. Police said Kang fled the scene.

Friday night, a Korean news agency reported that a passenger in the car tried to take the blame for the crash, but the car's black box told them Kang was behind the wheel.

In a statement, Kang said:

"I'd like to apologize to everyone who is disappointed with me. Today, I got behind the wheel after drinking, and committed an irrevocable mistake. I panicked at the moment of the accident and did something that I never should have done. I am deeply regretting the incident. I will humbly accept whatever punishment is deemed fit for my actions."
