Roethlisberger 'hopes' to play next season; no update on injuries to Conner, Golson

LATROBE, Pa. — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was back from his excused absence and took part in his first padded practice of training camp Monday.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger and the offense "won the day" and liked the competition during the team periods of practice.

Roethlisberger told NFL Network in an interview Monday that he "hopes" to play next season with the Steelers.

Reports surfaced in the off-season that Roethlisberger had contemplated retirement before this season.

During practice, wide receiver Martavis Bryant was on the side field doing conditioning and catching passes with Marcel Pastoor. Bryant has yet to be fully reinstated but is taking part in meetings with the team.

Rookie running back James Conner and defensive back Senquez Golson were sent back to a Pittsburgh-area hospital to be evaluated for their injuries. No updates were given by Tomlin.

Running back Le'Veon Bell still hasn't signed his franchise tag and did not report to camp Monday.

The players have Tuesday off but will return to practice Wednesday at St Vincent College in Latrobe.
