Customer Claims Waterproofing Company Left Basement Moldy

Target 11 Investigates Everdry

The freeze and thaw of late winter can create big problems in your basement, from cracking walls to water damage. There are several companies out there that claim they can waterproof your basement. Target 11's Karen Welles investigated complaints against one of them.

After paying nearly $10,000 to Everdry waterproofing in Evans City, Kathy Stepnick thinks the moisture problem in the basement of her West View home is worse than ever. Stepnick contracted with Everdry to install a French drain system in her damp basement.

"After a couple weeks I noticed there was water coming up through where they cemented," said Stepnick. "So they jack hammered everything out again and put the system back in."

Stepnick said her basement is still not dry, so she filed a complaint with the state attorney general.

Meanwhile, Stepnick had a contractor cut a hole in the wall and she found moldy and wet insulation.

According to a letter Everdry provided to the attorney general and to Target 11, they “have seen the basement is dry." The company did admit some of the work was not up to company standards and offered Stepnick money for damage. But it also claimed the lifting floor could be blamed on improper installation and insisted any mold was there before the company was contracted to do any work.

Stepnick's isn't the first complaint. The Better Business Bureau has received 28 complaints about Everdry in Evans City over the past three years.

Everdry advertises it's a member of several reputable associations. Although other Everdry franchises are members, Target 11 checked and the one in Evans City is not.

In 2006, the BBB was notified that Everdry was verbally indicating and posting in Yellow Page ads that they were a BBB member. The BBB said Everdry has never been a member.
