McDonald's Adds Wi-Fi To Side Of Fries

Updated: 2:20 pm EDT May 3, 2005

McDonald's is known for delivering fast-food burgers and fries.

Now, the restaurant giant is rolling out high-speed wireless Internet connections at a growing number of North Texas locations, Dallas television station KXAS reported.

More: How Wi-Fi Works

Company officials say the Wi-Fi connections available in 90 North Texas McDonald's locations are the first such service in the fast-food industry. The company expects to have Wi-Fi available in all of its 285 area stores by the end of the year.

The service operates at broadband speeds. Connection rates cost $2.95 for a two-hour online session.

"Most walk-up service is $6 an hour," said Michael Hansen, McDonald's regional systems manager. "So, at $2.95, we're 25 percent of that."

The new service seems to be catching on with some customers.

"I would bring my laptop up here, and I would use it any time I had a chance," Dallas Williams said.

One North Texas woman said the service would allow her to conduct business while treating her children to the McDonald's playground.

"I could sit right here and check my e-mail and do my business stuff all while the kids play," Shana Black said.
