Posted: 8:33 am EST January 3, 2008Updated: 1:15 pm EST January 18, 2008

Pittsburgh's next major road project is set to begin Thursday night. The work is part of the so-called "Gateway" project.

During the $429 million project, crews will remove and replace the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge that carries Route 885 over Forbes Avenue in Oakland. Right now, the project is about 30 percent complete.

Here are some of the key dates drivers need to be aware of:
  • At 11 p.m. Thursday, the Boulevard of the Allies closes to traffic.

  • Forbes Avenue will shut down at 10 p.m. Friday. The roadway will be closed until 6 a.m. Monday for demolition work.

  • In June, crews will begin construction of the new bridge.

  • From April 27 until August 24, traffic on Forbes Avenue will be reduced to a single lane.

  • The project is expected to wrap up in November.

    DETOUR INFORMATION:
If you are coming from the Parkway North, Parkway West or the Golden Triangle, the detour will take you onto the Parkway East, exiting at the Oakland Interchange which is Exit 2B.

From the South Hills, motorists will travel through the Liberty Tubes and across the Liberty Bridge, following Forbes Avenue into Oakland.

Those using Crosstown Boulevard and the Boulevard of the Allies outbound will find the longest delays with that detour taking you along the Parkway East outbound, through the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, exiting at Edgewood/Swissvale and then having to loop back around and taking the Parkway East inbound to the Oakland/Bates Street off ramp.
