Busy Pittsburgh-Area Bridge To Reopen After Repairs

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 – updated: 9:18 am EDT October 15, 2008

The state Department of Transportation says a bridge over the Ohio River will reopen Wednesday, eight days after it was closed due to a deteriorated floor beam during a routine inspection.

The Shippingport Bridge carries about 10,000 vehicles a day over the river on Route 168, which connects Shippingport with Industry borough. The bridge is about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

PennDOT officials closed the bridge when the faulty beam was discovered Oct. 7.

The emergency repairs will buy time until the bridge can get a complete makeover starting in November. That work will take until 2011 to complete.
