PennDOT Road Construction To Snarl Weekend Traffic

Posted: 3:09 pm EDT June 26, 2009Updated: 5:58 pm EDT June 26, 2009

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced several road construction projects scheduled for the weekend.

Officials said last week’s heavy rains delayed several road construction projects in its pipeline. The biggest projects will be along Parkway North (I-279) and Route 28.

Parkway North

In addition to single-lane closures between the Bellevue/West View Interchange (Exit 14) and I-79 (Exit 20) this weekend, bridge inspection activities will occur northbound in the area of the E.H. Swindell Bridge in the city of Pittsburgh between 7 a.m. and noon on Saturday. The bridge is just south of Haslett Street (Exit 9).

“Traffic on the Parkway North will be stopped in the outbound direction (Saturday) morning,” said PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi. “That will occur between 7 a.m. and noon.”

He said the bridge inspection will require brief traffic stoppages of 15 minutes or less on the northbound Parkway North and HOV lanes in the bridge area. Four stoppages are anticipated.

Route 28

Traffic on southbound (inbound) Route 28 will be reduced to a single lane near the Millvale Interchange (Exit 3) from 7 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

“Southbound Route 28 traveling in toward the city -- reduced to a single lane for the duration of the weekend, starting at 7 p.m. (Friday) through 5 a.m. on Monday,” Struzzi said.

The ramp from northbound Route 28 to Butler Street (Exit 4) in Etna will be closed this weekend from 7 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday. Northbound Butler Street will be closed, as well, between the northbound Route 28 off-ramp and Washington/Parker Street.

Also, the long-term closure of northbound (outbound) Route 28 at the Etna Interchange begins Sunday. The closure is necessary as crews will replace the 62nd Street (Robert D. Fleming) Bridge.

Other Construction

PennDOT has also scheduled the following construction projects for the weekend:

• The right lane and shoulder on the inbound Parkway East (I-376) are closed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Exit 15) to just west of the Penn Hills Interchange (Exit 11).

• Intermittent, short-term single right lane and shoulder closures will occur on the outbound Parkway East (I-376) between 6 a.m. to noon Saturday at Wilkinsburg (Exit 8B) and the Monroeville (Exit 14A) exit to southbound Route 48 for guide rail repairs.

• Intermittent, short-term single lane and shoulder closures will occur on northbound I-79 between 6 a.m. to noon Saturday for guide rail repairs.

• Intermittent, short-term single lane closures may occur from 10 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday, on the Parkway West (Route 22/30) in both directions in Robinson Township on Friday night. Crews will be performing a slow-moving operation in the left lane to remove old paint from the center barrier between the I-79 and Robinson Towne Centre interchanges.

• The on-ramp to I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard)/Route 380 (Bigelow Boulevard) from the Liberty Bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Crews will be removing and replacing concrete on the ramp. Signs will be posted to guide motorists during the ramp closures.
