Motorcyclist Falls To Death Off I-579 Ramp

Posted: 7:54 am EDT May 16, 2005Updated: 9:34 am EDT May 16, 2005

An autopsy will be performed Monday on a motorcyclist killed after he fell off a ramp on Interstate 579.

It happened just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Edward Campbell, 27, of Penn Hills, and a friend were riding their motorcycles when Campbell failed to go around a curve on the ramp heading toward the Veterans Bridge.

Campbell struck a retaining wall and fell over the side, striking a railroad bridge before landing on Route 28.

He died at the scene.

Officer Stephen Matakovich said, "You owe it to the victim to investigate it to the fullest extent and that's what we plan to do. I think the family needs a sense of closure. So, that's what we're going to do."

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash.

This isn't the first time a motorcyclist has died on this section of road. In fact, it's at least the fourth time it has happened.

Most recently, it was an accident in April 2001 when Mark Mihalic, 27, of Pittsburgh, died when he went over the wall and landed below.

State police said it's a sharp curve, and with a little speed, a motorcyclist can easily lose control.

Police asked Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to make changes to improve safety.

But PennDOT said the road design is not a problem. Instead, they say, the speeding drivers are the problem.
