Talented Pittsburghers Honored At 40 Under 40 Awards

Posted: 12:00 am EST November 7, 2009Updated: 1:23 am EST November 7, 2009

PUMP and Pittsburgh Magazine's 40 Under 40 Awards recognized 40 talented Pittsburghers under the age of 40 who are making a difference in the city.

“Each year, it is exciting to read the nominations and realize the impact that the nominees have on our community,” said Erin Molchany, executive director of PUMP. “Honoring young people for their personal and professional contributions to improving our region is something we at PUMP look forward to every year.”

The event Friday began with an award ceremony. The 40 honorees, including Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, were selected from a pool of nearly 300 candidates.

A reception followed the ceremony, where a DJ hit the turntables and honorees mingled. I spoke with some of them -- many of whom said they were proud to be chosen.

"It was really surprising. I don't think there have been that many artist candidates who have won. I'm really honored to be with all these amazing people who change the community. It's really exciting," said honoree and artist Cara Erskine.

"I've seen it occur for the last 10 years and looked at the quality of individuals honored, so to be among that list is humbling," said newly elected City Council member Robert Daniel Lavelle.

I asked Lavelle how he felt when he learned he was elected to council. "I'm really excited about the opportunity that exists," Lavelle said.

The 40 Under 40 winners were chosen based on their passion, commitment, visibility, diversity and overall impact on the region.

"The judges were challenged this year with scrutinizing a record-breaking number of nominations," said Betsy Benson, publisher of Pittsburgh Magazine. "The 40 people who rose to the top are community leaders noted for their intelligence, caring and drive.”
