Temperatures expected to drop 20 degrees, bring snowflakes

PITTSBURGH — After several days of above average temperatures in Pittsburgh, folks can expect a big change for the late week.

The cold front, which has helped to push rain into our neighborhoods, will be clear of the area Thursday. However, clouds and spotty showers continue Thursday.

“Although there are isolated showers forecast, much of the day should just be cloudy,” said Severe Weather Team 11 Meteorologist Scott Harbaugh. “A few wet snowflakes could mix in early Thursday – especially near I-80 and in the mountains.”

One big shock will be the drop in temperature. Both Tuesday and Wednesday brought highs in the 60s.

Many people will wake up Thursday to temperatures in the 30s. However, the wind chill will make it feel like the 20s in quite a few spots.

It will be breezy through the day with gusts to 25 mph possible. Even with a high temperature in the mid-40s, the wind chill will be in the 30s for much of the day, due to the gusty winds.

Even Friday won’t escape the unsettled conditions. Isolated rain and snow showers are in the forecast.

“A little wave of moisture should come through at a time where it’s cold enough for some snowflakes,” Harbaugh said.

Anything that does fall would be limited. Accumulations would be less than an inch and confined to cities near I-80 and in the ridges.

If you are looking to get outside over the weekend, Saturday would be the best day. Even though there will be more clouds than sun, it will remain dry.

Rain and snow showers return Sunday.
