Northern counties taking brunt of Tuesday's wintry weather

PITTSBURGH — An unsettled weather pattern will continue Tuesday, bringing snow showers to the Channel 11 News viewing area through the day.

Steady snow will fall along the Interstate 80 corridor, where 2-4 inches of snow are likely through the day. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit on I-80 to 45 mph in Clarion and Jefferson counties.

Snow created reduced visibility in some areas to the north of Pittsburgh, including on Interstate 279.

“It was fine until I got up here on 79. No snow at all, and I got up here and we got this,” Beverly Watt, of Monroeville, said. “I pulled over and I am going to sit and wait for it to slow down to get to work.”

Peter Johnson, of Wexford, had a similar experience. He said he didn’t have any problems when he drove into downtown Pittsburgh, but I-279 started to get slick as he headed north.

“Driving down was fine. No problems going down earlier this morning,” Johnson said. “Coming back, 279 was getting slippery. It was one of those, all the traffic was in the right hand lane so you stay out of the left hand lane because it has too much slush.”

In Pittsburgh and farther south, bands of snow were expected to move back into the area during the mid-to-late morning hours. Snow will mix with rain from time to time, limiting any additional snowfall to under an inch.

Colder air will wrap back into the area late Tuesday afternoon, changing all precipitation back over to scattered snow showers, which will continue through midnight Wednesday.

Butler County officials said there will be 45 trucks on the roads Tuesday. The county also worked ahead of the snow to pretreat the roadways.

Pittsburgh Public Works said it would have 50 trucks on the roadways and crews worked to pretreat the roads.
