Obama Channels Bush

If you just read the text of President Obama's speech on Afghanistan, you might be forgiven for thinking that parts of it were cut and pasted from the past debates on Iraq, and even from the speeches of former President George W. Bush.

Don't get me wrong - the two couldn't be more different in their approaches - but the words they used are almost the same at times about Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some of these quotes below are from President Obama's speech at West Point last night.  Some of them are from President Bush's speech to the nation in early January of 2007.

President Obama was announcing a surge of U.S.combat forces in Afghanistan.

President Bush was announcing a surge of U.S. combat forces in Iraq.

Both men said the goal was to stabilize a nation, and help the other government take control on their own terms.

"If we increase our support at this crucial moment," the President said, "we can hasten the day our troops begin coming home."

"Taken together, these additional American and international troops will allow us to accelerate handing over responsibility," said the other President.

"America's commitment is not open-ended," said one.

"America has no interest in fighting an endless war," said the other.

"We will have to use diplomacy, because no one nation can meet the challenges of an interconnected world acting alone," said the President.

"We will use America's full diplomatic resources to rally support," said the other.

"On September the 11th, 2001, we saw what a refuge for extremists on the other side of the world could bring to the streets of our own cities," said one.

"On September 11, 2001, nineteen men hijacked four airplanes and used them to murder nearly 3,000 people," said the other.

"America is engaged in a new struggle that will set the course for a new century. We can and we will prevail," said one President.

"America - we are passing through a time of great trial. And the message that we send in the midst of these storms must be clear: that our cause is just, our resolve unwavering," said the other.

"America is engaged in a new struggle that will set the course for a new century. We can and we will prevail," said the President.

"It can be tempting to think that America can put aside the burdens of freedom. Yet times of testing reveal the character of a nation," added the other.

"We will go forward with the confidence that right makes might, and with the commitment to forge an America that is safer," said the President.

"We go forward with trust that the Author of Liberty will guide us through these trying hours," said the other.

Half of those quotes are from Mr. Obama, half from Mr. Bush.  Some you can probably figure out.  Some you might get wrong.
