Another Big Week

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

There hasn't been much down time yet for President Barack Obama, and this week is no different.

Obama begins the work week on Monday morning by meeting with the nation's Governors at the White House.

The major issue of course is the economy, and the subtext of the meeting is the criticism of GOP Governors of the new economic stimulus law, with several openly discussing the option of refusing some of the stimulus money.

This has prompted some in both parties to say - if you don't want it, send it to some other state.

While a lot of today's "news" surrounding that meeting will be political in nature, Mr. Obama gets another chance to speak directly to the nation on Tuesday night when he goes before the Congress.

Expect him to again hammer home the theme that he first tried out with a gathering of Mayors on Friday, when he vowed to stop any stimulus project that seemed like wasteful pork.

Of course, as I always say, pork is in the eye of the beholder.  My good project is nothing but pork to you.

On Thursday, Mr. Obama will roll out the framework of his first budget.  It won't be the fully detailed budget that we usually get around this time of year.  That is going to wait until April evidently.

So look for a lot more talk this week, as opposed to minute detail.

It will be interesting to see what gets rolled out, because tax increases, extra spending and cutbacks can still be attacked by all sides in the Washington debate.
