Health Care Final

Previous Posts

Democrats capped a historic week in the Congress by pushing through a fix-it reconciliation bill, designed to make the final changes in a new health care reform law, while Republicans denounced the plan and vowed to overturn it.

"The time is now" for action, said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) as the House voted again on the reconciliation bill, slightly changed because of parliamentary points of order on the Senate side.

"We voted to end the most abusive practices of the insurance companies," said McGovern.

A lot of people still weren't buying the Congressional arguments from Democrats, as Republicans bitterly attacked the health care initiative, accusing Democrats of focusing so much time on the wrong issue.

"When are we going to focus on the economy? demanded House GOP Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

"When are we going to address the number one issue on the minds of our fellow citizens?"

Democrats though argue they have done that with last year's economic stimulus law, and now that they are done with health care, they can move on in coming weeks to a major financial reform bill dealing with Wall Street excesses.

Ever since the House voted to approve two health care bills on Sunday night, there has been the sense of momentum on the side of Democrats, something they haven't had in about nine months.

Will that last?  Who knows.

But if Democrats can get the Wall Street reform bill through the Congress, it's not hard to imagine the talking points of the President and top Democrats, laying out the arguments for Democrats in tough districts.

They'll start with the economic stimulus law, move on to health reform and wrapping up with the effort to crack down on Wall Street fat cats.

I'm not saying it will be a winning formula in November, but it sure gives Democrats the chance to offer up what they believe are major accomplishments.

Two weeks ago, it seemed like Democrats were close to imploding on health reform.

Two weeks later, they are the ones celebrating a huge legislative victory.

While it was obvious they could end up winning, having this happen after the win of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts does surprise me a little, because Democrats seemed like they had one foot in the grave back on January 20.

No more.
