Thousands of country music fans gathered for the Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw Brother's of the Sun concert at Heinz Field.
One word to describe the concert-- epic.
When I first received the call that I would be covering the concert for See & Be Seen, I didn't know what to expect. Before this summer I had only been to one concert ever, and to be frank, the Sara Bareilles show at Stage AE was by no means the same as Kenny Chesney at Heinz Field.
All summer my Twitter feed lit up with "#seeyouatkenny". The majority of people I follow go to Westminster College, so if a lot of kids from a small Amish town school are going, this must be the hottest event in Pittsburgh.
When I arrived to Heinz Field, the streets were covered with people in cowboy hats and ripped jeans with red Solo cups in hand. Parking lots were filled with country music, dancing, corn hole, and of course grilling. This was the largest tailgate I had ever been to. The first group of college kids I met started the party at 9 AM. The opening acts didn't even start until 4:30.
Everyone seemed to be having a great time. People were so friendly offering my fellow intern, Jemel, and I water or something to eat. Any time we asked to take their picture, they wanted us to get in with them.
At first I was surprised by everyone's hospitality, until I realized it was Pittsburgh. When the people of the Steel City come together for one common enjoyment, everyone gets along.
The tailgate was only the beginning, however. The concert itself was one of the coolest experiences I had ever encountered. For the first three acts, I stood in the middle of the crowd right at the end of the long stage. Jake Owen, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Tim McGraw were only feet from me. Everyone in the crowd was going wild, throwing their arms into the air, and tossing beach balls across the field.
When it was time to finally see Kenny Chesney, Heinz Field was filled. Not a seat went empty and the field itself was bumping with excitement. I knew something they didn't, though. I knew how Kenny was going to enter the stage.
Before the concert began, the media public relations agent, Kyle, and I were talking about the concert. He told me that Kenny was going to surprise the crowd by rising out of the platform in the middle of Heinz Field then swing across the field in this harnessed mechanism that was raised above the screaming fans.
I was so excited to see it in action. When the music began, everyone was looking at the stage, while I was staring at the platform. As soon as Kenny started rising, the crowd gasped and erupted in screams of joy. It made me feel pretty cool to tell my friends that I knew that was going to happen.
After Kenny swung onto the stage, the media was allowed onto the platform to take pictures and video. The platform hovered over everyone on the field and anyone in the stands could see who was on top of it. Two of my good friends texted me: "We can see you! We can see you!". I felt like a celebrity for about 30 seconds.
One thing that I took away from the whole experience was how much country music grows on you. Going into the concert, I wasn't a big fan. I couldn't tell you the name of two Kenny Chesney songs. Then after seeing the show, I really found an appreciation for the music. Country music stars really light up a stage. When they perform, they get the crowd involved, they're pumped up, they run around, they really have some fun! Their stage presence is what makes their music so catchy. When I saw Jake Owen jumping up and down, giving high-fives, and kicking beach balls into the crowd, I found myself singing along to the chorus.
It really was a party!
