Alyssa Wherry: Dude, why the Zoltan?

If you’re paying attention to the Pirates at all you know two things. First, they are having their first winning season in 19 years. Second, they have adopted the Zoltan as a way to celebrate.

I was born and raised a fan of all the professional Pittsburgh teams, which includes the Pirates, so seeing them winning is amazing. However, despite their disappointing record they’ve had my whole life I have been to several games every summer since I can remember.

Two years ago, I attended my first sold out Pirates game. This was the celebration of the 50 year anniversary of their 1960 World Series win. It was amazing seeing that many people in PNC Park and made the game so much more fun with everyone getting into it.

From what I hear there’s a lot of games this year that are packed and we don’t even need a reason to celebrate other than the Pirates are doing great! For all of the long time and bandwagon fans, this is great. The way I see it, it’s been hard to stay a true fan, but if you’re going to support them, go big! Buy shirts, hats, anything that shows your support and come to the games and yell and cheer to help keep the intensity high!

To address the second point, for those of you that don’t know what Zoltan is, go check out the movie” Dude, Where’s my Car?”

I’ve seen the movie, but I didn’t understand what the connection was. I decided to look it up. Here’s what I found.

It turns out during an away game in Atlanta, the team was watching TV and there was nothing to watch. They noticed that the movie “Dude, Where’s My Car?” was on and decided to watch it. The one thing they pulled from the movie was Zoltan.

Fans are now doing the Zoltan, which is done by putting your left hand above your right hand, touching your thumbs and making a Z shape.

The Zoltan may be a goofy way to show your support, but it seems to be bringing the Pirates together even more as a team, and getting the fans even more excited to cheer for their team. And hey, it seems like it may be helping us win, so why not join in!

Hoping this helped with any confusion on the Zoltan topic.

LETS GO PIRATES!
