Hannah Paczkowski: Black Widow

One word to describe how I felt when I first saw Kennywood’s Black Widow -- petrified.  Let me paint you a picture of the terrifying metal spider that soars innocent Kennywood lovers high into the sky.

First, the rider is strapped to a metal seat so tightly there is no possible way that person can move. Next, the Black Widow begins to spin its web. The ride starts moving in a slow circular motion while picking up speed to the right and left. Those strapped to the metal contraption are lifted higher and higher into the air while slowly spinning.  For the grand finale, the spider lifts the circle so high into the air that riders feel as if they are upside down into the clouds.

Talk about a thrill!

See and Be Seen’s Rob Johnston and interns Brian and Denny joined me as I faced my fear of heights.

After seeing a test run of the Black Widow, I quickly decided that this ride was not for me. Though the first batch of adrenaline junkies were full of smiles and clapping after being safely on the ground, I was still unsure if I had the courage to face the Black Widow.

Finally, Brian and Denny convinced me that I’ll regret not being one of the first to test out the new ride. They, of course, had the satisfaction of sitting right next to me while I screamed.

I was terrified from the get-go and making sure everyone in the park knew by yelling at the top of lungs through the entire experience. However, as we descended, I decided that the Black Widow really wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. It was thrilling but safe. The metal harnesses were fastened so securely there wasn’t a chance of falling out. Looking back on it, I actually had a great time.

Though I told Brian and Denny that I would never forgive them for making me brave the Black Widow, deep down I secretly thanked them for helping me get over my fear of heights.

Next time you’re at Kennywood, I recommend trying out the ‘Black Widow’. If I can brave the terrifying height, you can too.
