Gretchen Unico: Pittsburgh's Best Wings

Although I didn’t intern as much as usual this week because I was off for Memorial Day, yesterday totally made up for it.  That was the day I helped out with the taste test for the Pittsburgh’s Best Wings competition.

Sadly, “helping out” didn’t mean that I personally got to judge the wings.  My job was to take pictures for the website.  I photographed the restaurant owners, the entries themselves and the judges while they ate.  The panel of judges was mostly made up of WPXI staff, but See & Be Seen also invited Mikey and Big Bob from 96.1 KISS’ Morning Freak Show.  I was actually a little excited to see those guys because I want to work in radio someday. I like to see DJs in person to get an idea of how they really are, what they do and the kinds of events they attend.  Plus, just seeing DJs at events gets me excited about possibly having a job like theirs someday.

As expected, Mikey and Big Bob were hilarious, but so were a lot of the other judges.  David Johnson was pretty funny.  He made a lot of little jokes and reminded me of how George Clooney might act if he were judging a competition on TV or something.

I was actually kind of surprised by how critical and thorough everyone was in the judging process.  Apparently, people are really serious about their chicken wings.

Unfortunately, I don’t eat wings very often, so my stomach was not quite as happy as I was after I ate all of that heavy sauce and grease, but I’d still say it was worth it.  I’ll just have to get more used to eating wings in case I get invited to judge a competition when I work for a station some day.
