Liam Halferty: Hello Pittsburgh!

Summer Web Interns 2012
Liam Halferty

Hello Pittsburgh! My name is Liam Halferty. I am a summer intern at WPXI, and this is my story:

I will be a senior this fall at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Being from the inner-city of Pittsburgh and moving to New Wilmington for school in 2009 was a big adjustment for me. However, I have adapted to the rural setting of the Amish farmland of Lawrence County.

I am studying Broadcast Communications at Westminster with aspirations of someday working in the sports media field. I hope to one day become a sports reporter, talk-radio host, writer or anchor.

As you can probably infer, my life revolves around one thing --- sports.

I have played sports, watched sports, and talked about sports for pretty much my entire 21-year existence. I am currently on the baseball team at Westminster. Our team recently won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship and earned the school’s first ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. Pretty exciting stuff.

I also played basketball for two years at Westminster but decided to retire my three-point jumper to the intramural league before this past season.

I am a pretty big Pittsburgh sports fan and hope to one day see the Pirates achieve the unthinkable: a winning season. The Buccos are my favorite sports team, and it saddens me to see them finish with a sub-.500 record year-in and year-out. I can only pray that the battling Bucs can raise the Jolly Roger into the playoffs sometime soon. I am also a fan of Pitt, the Penguins and the Steelers.

I watch "SportsCenter" and "Pardon the Interruption" almost every day, and I enjoy watching almost any sporting event.

Aside from sports, I do enjoy music, mainly hip-hop and rap. My favorite artists include Pittsburgh-bred Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa, as well as Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Drake and Joe Budden. I am also a big Blink-182 fan.

I grew up in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh and attended the tradition-rich Central Catholic High School in Oakland, where I graduated in 2009.

At Westminster, I work as the sports editor for our school paper, "The Holcad." I am also an anchor and reporter on our sports news show, "Titan Town Sports." Along with those duties, I am the play-by-play announcer for the women’s basketball games on radio and television, and I cover the Wilmington High School football team with a weekly blog titled “Greyhound Roundup.” I work on the school’s weekly magazine news show, The County Line, as well.

I am more than excited to start this awesome internship with WPXI, hoping I gain a lot of experience in the field while getting to work with some pretty cool people along the way!
