Sky Signs Free Agent Canty

Posted: 4:35 pm EST February 12, 2007

(Sports Network) - The Chicago Sky signed free agent guard Dominique Canty on Monday. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Canty has spent the last three seasons as part of the Houston Comets. In 2005, she started a career-high 32 games. This past season she was averaging 10.9 points, 2.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds before suffering a broken finger.

"Adding Dominique to our team is like adding three players," said Sky head coach Bo Overton. "She's a versatile player, with the ability to play point guard, shooting guard or small forward. She's a great defender and a strong, physical player, and her experience in the league will be invaluable to our young team."

Canty was selected by the Detroit Shock 29th overall in the 1999 WNBA Draft, finishing her rookie season runner-up for the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year. In 2000, she set a franchise record for steals and co-led the Shock in assists.

"I am so excited about the opportunity to come home and play in front of my friends and family," said Canty, a Chicago native. "I've been praying for a team in Chicago ever since the league started, and now I get to play for that team. I'm looking forward to being the veteran on a young, hard-working team, and I'm going to do my best to help the Sky win."

The Sky celebrated its inaugural season in 2006.
